    On 13 March 1829, Henry Carter resides in Stokes Co., and 67 years of age, made the following declaration to obtain the provisions made by act of Congress on 18 March 1818:
    He was enlisted by Capt. John Marks in September 1779 in Albemarle Co., VA, for an 18 month term in the 2nd Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Haws. Capt. Marks resigned and his place was taken by Capt. John Anderson in the same Continental line unit. He was discharged at Salisbury, NC after serving the full 18 months by Maj. Jones. He was present at the battles of Guilford Courthouse, Camden, Eutaw Springs, and Ninety Six. His service is proved by the certificates of "two respected revolutionary soldiers" Isaac Bullin and Samuel Burchett.

    "My occupation is a farmer without ability to pursue it...I have a wife and one daughter living with me, both unable to get their living. Carter and Anderson & Winston Carter...George is in Illinois and Anderson in Virginia..."

    Declaration of Henry Carter (age 67) -- Stokes Co., NC, Mar. 13, 1829 -- He enlisted in Sept. 1779 in Albemarle Co., VA, for 18 months under Capt. John Marks and Col. Haws, and later Capt.     On 19 April 1825, Henry Carter vouched for Isaac Bullin's Revolutionary War Pension application. Bullin fought along with Carter at the battles of Guilford Courthouse, Eutaw Springs, and Ninety Six. In 1825 both men resided in Stokes County, North Carolina.
    The Stokes Co. NC, Minutes of Superior Court, April 1825, C. R. # 090.311.2 state:
    "Henry Carter Esquire, an old Revolutionary Soldier, a man of Respectability and varasity...made Oath that he Served a Greater part of the above time with the above named declarant Isaac Bullin...

    This indenture made the ninth day of June in the year of
    our lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety one Between
    John Shiflett and Joice his wife of Albemarle County of the
    one part and Roland HORSLY of the said county of the other
    part. Witnesseth that the said John Shiflett and Joice his
    wife for and in Consideration of the Sum of Fifty one
    pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the
    said Roland Horsly the receipt wherby he doth herby
    acknowledge hath granted bargained Sold Aliened Enfeffed?
    and Confirmed and by these presents . . .to the said Roland
    Horsely and to his Heirs . . .one certain tract or parcel
    of land containing one hundred and a half acres more or
    less lying and being in Albemarle County of the south side
    of the north fork of James River adjoining the waters of
    Meadow Creek and is bounded as follows To wit Beginning at
    a forked Spanish Oak on the Road that leads to
    Charlottesville just below the fork by Thomas BURTONs thus
    running a New line an East Course Crossing a Branch to
    Henry CARTERs line thence down the said Branch on Carters
    line to Martin HAWKINs line thus along Hawkins's line
    Crossing the said Road to Benn--- Carters line thus along
    Carters line to a Red oak corner on Carters land adjoining
    George BOOTH Thus running a new line to the upper corner of
    the sd. Roland Horsleys f(ence?) on the Road thus up the
    said Road to the first Station. To Have and to Hold . . .to
    the said Rowland Horsley . . .of this the said John
    Shiftell and Joice his wife . . .in presence of

    This indenture made the fourteenth day of July in the year
    of our Lord one Thousand seven hundred Ninety one between
    John Shiflet and Joice Shiflet his Wife of Albemarle County
    of the one part and Henry CARTER aforesaid County of the
    other part . . .That the said John Shiflet and Joice
    Shiflet his wife for and in Consideration of the sum of
    Thirty pounds Current mony of Virginia to him in hand paid
    by the said Henry Carter. . .hath granted sold . . .one
    Certain Tract of Parcel of land containing Thirty five
    acres more or less lying and being in Albemarle County & is
    bounded as follows (to wit) Beginning at an old field back
    of the said John Shiflets apple orchard on a Locust tree on
    the path that leads from Shiflets to David SPRADLINGs
    thence running a South corse [sic] to Rowland HORSLEYs line
    to a white oak. Thence running up Horsleys line to his
    corner Spanish Oak on the Road. Thence along the Road by
    Thomas BURTONs down to the fork that makes round the lower
    side of the said John Shiflets fence to a small Red Oak
    Saplin, cornerring on the same. Thence down the said Road
    to the said Path that makes to David Spradlings thence down
    the said Path to the beginning . . .to the said Henry
    Carter. . . the said John Shiflet and Joice Shiflet his
    wife . . .hath hereunto set their hands and Seals.

    According to the form and effect of the within Written
    Deed.

    shall pay the condemnation of the Court or render their
    bodies to prison in execution thereof or that they will do

    [The will below is an exact copy of the will filed in the
    land grant packet of the Heirs of John Shiflett deceased.
    It differs in a few places in capitalization and a few
    words from the will as recorded in the Albemarle will book.
    There is no difference in fact.]

    September seventh one thousand seven hundred and ninety
    four. I John Shiflett of the County of Allbemarle and state
    of Virginia being weak of body but of perfect mind and
    memory, thanks be to god for the same but calling to mind
    the uncertainty of life and knowing that it is appointed
    once for all men to die do make or ordain this my last will
    and Testament that is to say as follows I give and
    recommend my soul to all mighty God my body to the earth to
    be buried in a decent form doubting but I shall recover the
    same at the General Reserrection and touching such Estate
    wherewith It has been pleased God to bless me in this I
    hereby give demise and dispose of the same in the following
    manner, Item I give and bequeth to my wife Joice all my
    lands Tenaments and moveable Estates of all kinds during
    the time she remain my widow and at the decease of my said
    wife Joice I give to my daughter Mary the tract of land
    whereon I now live and the negro woman named June and her
    issue also at the Death of the said Joice Shiflett, my wife
    I leave my son Joel the sum of thirty pounds to be raised
    and paid out of my Estate, and the remaining part of my
    Estate At the same time to be equally divided among all my
    children & I further appoint and request Charles Goodman
    and Roland Horseley to execute this my last will and
    Testament.

    to execute this my last will and testament. Signed and

    Owen Lewis Stewart Owens and John Bent who being elected
    tried and sworn the truth to speak joined upon there saith
    do find for the plaintiff the debt in the Declaration
    mentioned to be discharged by the payment of twelve pounds
    sixteen shillings and eight pence Therefore it is
    considered by the Court that the plaintiff recover against
    the said Defendants twenty pounds the Debt in the
    declaration mentioned and the said Defendants Mercy & etc
    But this Judgment is to be discharged by the payment of
    twelve pounds sixteen shillings and eight agreable to the
    finding of the Jury her costs by her about her suit in this
