1860 Slave Schedule of the Federal Census J. H. Middleton is listed as emp, heirs E. G. Green. In a e-mail from Edgar D. Byler III, he explains the "emp" means employer. Many times slave owners rented or leased their slaves to businesses since the owners themselves did not have work for them. A lot of slaves were used in the iron works and furnaces here in Wayne County. Others were used on the wharves at Carrollville and Clifton, loading and unloading boats and barges. The "heirs" would indicate that the original slave owner was dead and that the slaves were still the possession of the estate and had not yet been divided amongst the heirs.
