January 19th, 1859.
My Dear Sir.--
Yeurz of Dec. 27th, to hand, forwarded from Ravena to Hiram, and from Hiram to Hopedale; and I hasten to acknowledge it, and I thank you for attention to me, and the information you communicate concerning your kindred.
I am the youngest member of a family of seven sons and one daughter of Samuel Hayden. He, our father came to western Pennsylvania from New Jersey when about thirteen years old.
In Westmoreland County he married Sophia Gray, and after the birth of three sons, William, Arthur and John, he moved to Youngstown, Trumbull Co. Ohio, about the year 1803, in the month of April.
My Grandfather was Christopher Hayden, he came from Boston and married Elizabeth Sutton, their children follow. Nichodemus, Christopher, Martin, Philip, Ebenezer, one name lost to me, and Samuel my father, Rhoda, Priscilla, Mary and Elizabeth.
My father married Sophia Gray, October 3rd, 1798. Their children I will give though it will not help to decide the question of consanguinity between us.
William, living in Chaquot Falls, Ohio
Arthur Gray, living in Salem, Columbia Co. O.
Christopher, living in Porter, Van Buren Co. Mich.
Daniel, living in Deerfield, Portage Co. O.
Rhoda Dean, living in Canfield, Mahoning Co. O.
Samuel, living in Paw Paw, Van Buren Co. Mich.
Amos Sutton, your present correspondent.
My father died March 29th, 1840, and mother March 21st, 1841.
On the whole, I cannot see any point of immediate affinity. Doubtless of the same stock, but for the want of records the steps cannot be traced.
We should be happy to receive you into our school, which is quite flourishing. Or at least to receive a visit from you.
Excuse the evidences of haste in this, as I am writing it in the midst of school duties.
Hoping to hear from you at your leisure.
Respectfully & Truly,
[the intended recipient is unknown - ed.]
