Biography of Mrs. Edith I. Chisholm - 1913 - 1991, by Rev . Mark Ferrier, Green Bay, United Church
Edith Chisholm was a strong, capable woman. The Satur day evening before her husband Jule's funeral, together wit h her grand-daughter, Ruth, she shared memories of 59 year s with Jule, and some glimpses into her own life.
As much as people knew Edith's health was not always s trong, none could have predicted that she would pass away t hree weeks after her beloved husband, Jule.
Edith was a good woman - a woman of faith in Jesus Chr ist, who reflected in her life, his love, his welcome, hi s generosity. Edith was a hard-working person who loved he r husband and her family, dearly. Like Jule, Edith showe d in her own quiet way her real caring for her family, comm unity and church.
Edith was born on July 19, 1913 at home in Billings To wnship, the daughter of Richard and Emma Tustian. If anyon e asked her age, Edith would simply tell them, "I'm as ol d as that bridge in Little Current." Edith Tustian grew u p on the family farm, out in what is known as the Tustian S ettlement.
Edith attended the Billings School, as well as the Bil lings United Church with her family. The community hall st ood alongside, prompting some in the community to refer t o the buildings as: Education, Salvation, and Damnation!
It was a church foundation that first brought Jule Chi sholm of Rockville and Edith Tustian together. The Rockvil le community had raised funds and donated labour sufficien t to realize their dream of a United Church to serve the co mmunity. On a very stormy Sunday, November 24, 1929, the c hurch was dedicated , with 3 services, morning, afternoon , and evening. The Billings choir was in attendance at th e evening service - they had been hosted by the Spry's fo r supper. There, Jule and Edith first met. Through visit s back and forth and socials at Billings, they fell in lov e and were married at the Little Current United Church mans e on January 6, 1932.
Jule and Elizabeth Chisholm made their home in Rockvil le, with Lily Spry Snow, who lived in the Manitoulin Lodg e in Gore Bay. Lily Spry died in her 105th year in the fal l of 1991.
Edith described her marriage as a partnership with a l oving husband. "We were partners in marriage, business an d in life. We worked hard for there was always so much t o do on the farm with the livestock and the turkeys and th e field of peas! We were always busy. Edith also remember ed her mother's words, "Don't ever let the sun set on an ar gument" and for Jule and Edith, it never did, not that ther e were many occasions they did argue." The only bone of co ntention was Jule's frequent buying on new cars - all of th em Fords. Their first she remembered as a 1930 Ford Roadst er with a rumble seat, for only $695.
Together, Jule and Edith operated the Manitou Haven Lo dge on the shore of Lake Manitou, providing accommodation i n the nine cottages. Edith worked hard in the lodge kitche n; turning out 3 meals a day for their guests.
In the community, Edith was an active member of the Ro ckville Women's Institute and a dedicated worker for the Ca nadian National Institute for the Blind.
Edith was a lifelong member of the United Church of Ca nada through the congregation at Billings, Rockville and th en Green Bay. She served on the church Board and Manse Com mittee at the Little Current Pastoral Charge. Edith was al so a fine church musician, playing the organ in the Rockvil le Church, and as backup for Isabelle Skippen over at Gree n Bay.
Edith took great pleasure in her family. Together sh e and Jule and 3 sons - James, Julian Jr., Richard and on e daughter, Barbara. She was a good mother, and grand-moth er, and great grandmother. Edith's gingersnaps were the be st on the Manitoulin, drawing on her own mother's recipe.
Edith and Jule moved from Rockville into Mindemoya t o the Senior Citizens' Apartments in November. 1989 - the m ove was harder for Jule, Edith remembered, because Rockvill e was the only place he ever knew. But with help from fami ly and friends like Charlie and Rita Parkinson, it was a go od move.
On Tuesday, October 8, 1991 Edith's health took a ba d turn and she was admitted to hospital in Mindemoya. Ther e she died on Friday, October 10, 1991.
At her funeral, Edith asked that 2 Corinthians 5:1 - 1 0 be read from the Bible. It was written by the apostle Pa ul to the Christian church he had founded in Corinth. Th e passage shows a concern for the people - that they have s uffered for their faith, and yearn to be with God.
"For we know that if the earthly tent we live in i s destroyed, we have a building from God a house not made w ith hands, eternal in the heavens. Here, indeed we groan a nd long to put on our heavenly dwelling"…… (2 Cor. 5:1-2 RS V)
Edith Chisholm and Jule Chisholm were humble, hardwork ing people-being part of the church community, worshippin g and serving Jesus Christ gave them courage and strength i n their life together, even in those hard times when deat h of their son, Richard or grand-daughter, Carol or daughte r- in law Doris.
Edith left many good memories - of a loving mother, gr andmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, and a lovi ng wife and partner. She leaves an example of a good life , and life of joy and faith in her Lord Jesus Christ. "I w as always of good courage; I know that while I was at hom e in the body….away from the Lord, I walked by faith, not b y sight."
