  • Name: Matilda Marilla "Tilda" TATUM
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: 12 FEB 1860 in Stoddard Co, MO
  • Death: 5 FEB 1929 in Rover, Oregon Co, MO
  • Burial: 8 FEB 1929 Jolliff Cem, near Rover, Oregon Co, MO
  • Note:

She? put on the 1900 & 1910 census that her father was born in KY and her mother in MO. Her step-mother was born in MO, but her father was born in TN and her real mother probably in IL. But maybe Rab gave the info to the census taker.

Her obituary lists her birthdate as Feb. 12, 1859. However, her parents weren't married until April 1859, and the 1860 census (taken in Sept) listed her as 1 month old (that would make her birthdate Aug 12, 1860). However, the census could be wrong. It probably meant 7 months instead of 1, so I am going with Feb. 1860, since the family was probably right about her birthday being Feb. 12.

Matilda's mother died when she was 5 and her father married Caroline Webb in 1865 who raised her.

Young Matilda and a friend were walking home from school one day (back when everything was a prairie) and were followed by a panther. Knowing they could not outrun it, they tore up a red shawl which belonged to one of them and dropped it piece by piece. As the panther got to each piece he stopped and ripped it to shreds, giving the girls time enough to get away.

Her father moved to Lawrence Co, Ark bet 1874-1880. She was 18 when she married Rab Jolliff in Oregon Co, Mo in 1878. I?m not sure where she was living when she met him. I don't know why Matilda would have married in Oregon County or why she would have even been in Oregon Co. In 1892 Rab?s nephew (John George Washington Jolliff) married Tilda?s half sister, Amanda Tatum, and they also lived in Oregon Co, Mo. (Amanda died in 1897.)

On Feb. 7, 1929, the front page, near the bottom, of the South Missourian Democrat had this news article:
"News was received of the death of Mrs. Rab Jollif (sic) of near Rover on Tuesday morning. Mr. & Mrs. Jollif have been residents of Highland Township many years and their many friends will be sorry to hear of her death."

Tilda was carried to Jolliff Cemetery in the back of Clara (granddaughter) and Hade Trantham's Model-T truck. It was snowing the day she was buried.

On Feb. 14, 1929, Matilda's obituary was printed on the front page, near the top:
"Matilda M. Jolliff was born February 12, 1859 (sic) and died February 5, 1929; age 69 years, 11 months, and 23 days. She was married to J.R. Jolliff, July 11, 1878. To this union twelve children were born; four of them and the father survive. Mrs. Jolliff had been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church for 39 years, and lived a faithful Christian life. She was devoted to her family, friends and church and will be greatly missed in her accustomed place. Funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Perry Bennett, at the Rover Baptist Church Thursday the 7th, and she was laid to rest in the Jolliff Cemetery to await the resurrection morn."
