Note: GENEALOGY McLendon Family
Believed to be written by Miss Ella McLendon, daughter of Jesse McLendon and granddaughter of Isaac McClendon and Mary Fincher, to accompany a letter dated January 31, 1918 and addressed to Mrs. Annie Eliza McClendon, daughter-in-law of Etheldred McClendon. In the letter, Ella states that she did not write anything down during her father's lifetime, and relied on her memory "of things he has told in a casual way."
Jacob, Tom and Isaac McLendon, brothers, were born in Edinburg, Scotland. Came to America sometime in the 1700. So far as known were the only members of the family who ever came to America. Isaac, our progenitor, married during the Revolutionary War at Philadelphia, Penn. To Miss Mary Fincher, who was born in Dublin, Ireland. He fought in the Revolutionary War. The number of acres named in Plot and Grant given by State for services rendered his country, indicate his rank in the army-that of a private. During these perilous times have heard my father say that fourteen years of his father's life was lost, as he lived in a fort for protection. He and my grandmother came to Ga. on pack-horses but do not know where they first settled. Their last home was Monticello where my father, the youngest child was born. The old McLendon homestead still remains and in a very good state of preservation, I have been told. There were seventeen children, eight sons and nine daughters: Sons: Etheldred, Allen, Wyley, James (?), Freeman, Jeremiah, Johnathan, Jesse. Daughters: Mary (McL)Pearson, Sallie (McL)Loyal, Cynthia (McL) Pritchet, Mrs. Andres, whose given name I have forgotten, Betsy 9McL) Maxey, Ceney (McL) Martin, Drodimmie (McL) Fincher, Elethia (McL) Bailey, Eliza McLendon died in infancy, Johnathan, next to my father died at the age of 21. The others all married and had families. Uncle Freeman and Mrs. Andrews moved to Greenville. Uncle Jeremiah and my father to LaGrange. Do not know where the other brothers lived. Mrs. Pearson and Loyal in Griffin; Mrs. Pritchet, I believe in Monticello; Mrs. Maxey Barnville, Mrs. Martin and Fincher, Ala., Mrs. Bailey, Columbus Miss. Uncle Steve, her husband, married quite a fortune. Had a nice family and left them in good circumstances. Several of her children have visited us at different times. About the disputed C. Have heard my father and Uncle Freeman argue about it. Uncle Freeman said my father dropped the C and my father contended he had added one, that he lived with his father longer than any of the children and he spelt it just as his father did. Uncle Jeremiah and my father spelt the name alike. The McLendon District in Troup owned by Uncle J. spell the name as we do. McLendons here in Atlanta of some prominence spell the name as we do. The State Plot and Grant has two C's. I asked Mr. Cook, State Treas. About it. Said it made no difference that clerks in recording wrote a name as it sounded. You will observe I have written an interrogation point after James in the brothers list. My reason for doing so was not quite sure of his name. N.B. Mac is Scottish and Mc Irish for spelling Mc's.
Another Bunch Tom McLendon, brother of Jacob and Isaac had two children, Tom and John. John son of John married Jane Kirbey of Troup and lived in Newman. They had four children, Orlando, a prominent lawyer in Newman. John civil engineer; Lizzie who married Judge Bigby of Newman, Loula married Walter Gordon, brother of Gen. John B. Jordon (sic). After his death, she married a Mr. Donaldson, of man of prominence from Bainbridge, where she now lives. N.B. Do not know anything of Jacob's family. Cousin Orlando wrote me the first she ever heard of the McLendons was from Ralleigh, N. Carolina.
[Natalie McClendon's note: No other evidence is known that identifies the birth place of Isaac McClendon as Edinburgh or Midlothian Co, Scotland. No mention is made of them living in North Carolina, where most all of the other McClendons in Georgia came from. Fincher researcher place Mary Fincher's birthplace at Orange Co, NC, and her father's, Jonathan Fincher 1730, at Chester Co, PA. Chester Co is just south of Philadelphia. The source of their information is not known. The only for sure known errors in this account are with a couple of the daughter?s married names were mixed up. Mrs. Andrews, whose given name the author could not remember, was Ceney. Therefore, she also had Mrs. Martin wrong, because she attached Ceney to Martin. Mrs. Martin was Bethia, not even named by the author. ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source:"Concord Primitive Baptist Church, Jasper Co, GA, 1812-1829 Minutes and Membership Roll" Microfilm # 687 available through interlibrary loan; Mercer University "The Number of Male Members in the Church" Sept.
