James Shirley (1750-1801). 1st Wife: Margaret ---. 2nd wife: Mary MEEKIN
Dorcas CULLINS SHIRLEY, widow of Richard SHIRLEY

Two Shirley brothers and the widow of a third came to Barren County in the period 1798-99. Thomas Shirley, James Shirley and Dorcas Cullins Shirley, widow of Richard Shirly, came to Barren County from Scott County, Kentucky, near Georgetown where they had lived since 1792. Previously they had lived in the Abbeville District, South Carolina, from 1783, but they had originally lived in Prince William County, Virginia near Broad Run. In Barren County they settled along the headwaters of the Barren, Blue Spring, White Oak and Fallen Timber Creeks; however, part of the area where they settled is now in Metcalfe County.

Thomas and Mary Shirley's children were: Richard, Thomas, Jr., Elijah, Nancy, Eliabeth, Lettice, Sarah and Frances.

James and his first wife whose name is not known had one son, Ezekiel. He and his second wife, Mary Meekin, had these children: Robert, Jane, Caleb, Melinda, Permelia, and Jesse.

Richard, who had died in Scott County in 1796, had three children by his first wife, Margaret ---: Susannah, Sarah and Amy. By his second wife, Dorcas, who came to Barren County as his widow, had three children that are known: Deliliah, Elizabeth and Richard. [This wrong...Richard only married once]

The Dripping Spring Baptist Church was constituted in 1798 with Robert STOCKTON as pastor and two Shirleys as the first two names on the original record: Thomas and Mary Shirley. Other members of the Shirley family were also active in the church.
