This man is NOT yet a proven son to James Mauldin, as Carl Mauldin believes, or to Benjamin & Sarah Poplin Mauldin, but these are a good possibilities. Thanks to many good researchers who have helped with this file. Carl Mauldin of FL provided many great clues, as have Paulette Gilcrest, Don Berry, my late Aunt Marjorie Mauldin Whited and many others too numerous to name here. This file is NOT complete and I am sharing these notes in hopes of making a better report, one that will eventually accurately reflect our MAULDIN ancestors and their lives. But for now (Sept. 2004), just use these notes as reference. Some items have been updated as of March 2007.

Carl Mauldin of FL wrote in Dec. 2002: "A good bit of information on Herod Maulden was supplied by his grandson Benjamin Franklin Mauldin son of James Maulden and his wife Elizabeth (Hawkins) to his grandson.. Benjamin Franklin's grandson was William Benjamin Mauldin of Crane Hill AL who published for many years the Mauldin News. Wm Benjamin was the son of Joseph Miles Mauldin (son of Benjamin Franklin & his first wife Margaret E. Thomas) and his wife Delia Moody. I suspect (but) have been unable to prove that Herod is most likely the son of Benjamin Maulden and his wife Sarah (Popland) Poplin who were formerly of Chatham Co., NC to Laurens Co., SC., where he was found in 1786 State Census. Another possible parent is Labon Malding who was also found in Laurens Co., SC with Herod and Benjamin. I do believe that Labon was the father of Hyrum and that Hyrum and Herod were cousins." Since this 2002 mailing, Carl has revised his belief and now feels that Herod was John Mauldin's father.

Researcher, Don Barry, is a descendant of Herod Mauldin also, and gives some of the entered data. He knew of one child, James, born in Columbia, SC 1791 who died in Steel, St. Clair Co., AL who married Elizabeth Hawkins 1817. Elizabeth, he claims, was born in 1799 in SC and died in Steel also. They had a daughter Nancy, who was born in GA in 1818, died 1889 in Steel and married Rev. Tisdel S. Logan 8/9/1835 in St. Clair Co., AL. They had 5 children, one of whom was Joseph P. Logan, Mr. Barry's 2nd great-grandfather. He used information from research compiled by Leonarde Andrea of Columbia, SC in 1949 for a Mr. Hurst Mauldin and others, at the Ashville Courthouse.

Mr. Ervin Mauldin of NC listed children of Herod Mauldin as James b. 1792 who m. Elizabeth Hawkins 1817 and William Mauldin b. 1800 (his note says William went to AL then to MS). Mr. Ervin Mauldin had other notes on this chart which indicated he believed that Herod, Herron, Hyrum were one and the same person. However, current evidence suggests that Hyrum was not the same as Herod who died in AL and Hyrum who died in MS.

Herod Mauldin is listed on the 1820 St. Clair Co., AL census, page 489 (same page with his son James) as H. Malden, 1m21+, 2m-21, 1f21+, 4 persons total.

From the FTM homepage of Carl Mauldin: Looking for any information on Herod Mauldin - Carl says that Herod is NOT the son of Henry Mauldin who is listed as the son of Francis Mauldin of MD and who married a Miss Rucker. Unable to make a Mauldin-Rucker connection in that time frame. Henry Mauldin son of Francis Mauldin of MD married Martha Amos in GA 1798. Martha probably a cousin of Henry. He has a large data base on Mauldins - Thanks to Bill & Elsie Mauldin of AL and Ervin Mauldin of NC.

"Herod was first found in Laurens Co., SC State Census 1786. He was found again in Laurens Co., SC Federal Census as having two sons under 16 years of age and one daughter. I personally have not determined his wifes name - but have been advised that her name was Naomi Hawkins and she is a sister to Peter Hawkins who resided in Newberry Co., SC."
