  • Name: Lurana or Lourenna CARPENTER
  • Sex: F
  • Change Date: 06 DEC 2006
  • Birth: ABT 18 DEC 1811 in Fairmont, Monongalia, Virginia 1
  • Death: 10 SEP 1860 in Taylor County, Virginia 1 2
  • Burial: Near McGee, Taylor County, Virginia
  • Endowment: submitted
  • Note:
VARYING NAMES: Lurana is listed multiple ways. In the 1850 Census it appeared to be "Susanna" or "Lurana". On several deeds it appears to be "Lorena". In the family history recorded by grandson Isaac, her name is reported as "Lurana". "Lurana" Harr is also recorded in the Scranage Cemetery records, dated 8/25/1929. On her son, John Marion Harr's death cerfificate, it said: "Father: Richard Harr; Mother: Loraine Carpenter Harr, both born in Fairmont." Several times her name was also given as "Lorenna", "Lourenna" or "Lorenna", as in the "Carpenters of the South" above. See C-3, page 3. Also see H-6, #5 in the files of third great grand daughter Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, Colorado.

!CENSUS: 1850 Virginia, Taylor County, 63rd District Census; DPL Film Va-1850, Roll 9, Page 185, recorded 10 or 11 August 1850; recorded by Jan Hornick 2 Sep 1995: "Richard Harr, 43, M, Farmer; Lurana, 38, F; Firman, 21, M; Elizabeth, 19, F; Minor, 17, M; Adaline, 15, F; John, 13, M; Cassa, 11, F; Asahel, 9, M; Virginia, "7", F; "Cleminz" (very difficult to interpret), 6, F"; all born in Virginia. See H-23, #1a and a copy of the original, #1b, in the files of Jan Hornick. NOTE: Jan's interpretation of "Asahel" conflicts with that of the County Clerk who sent the information to Jan in Feb. 1974 who gave the name as "Isabel". See H-6, #5. However, it was clearly "Asahel" and a male.

!CENSUS: 1860 Virginia, Taylor County, (Pruntytown P. O.); DPL Film Va-1860, Roll ll, Page 541, recorded 16 June 1860: "Richard Harr, 53, M; Farmer; "Lurena", 48, F; Homer, 12, M; Virginia, 10, F;" all born in Virginia. See See H-22, #2. QUESTION: Why wasn't Homer listed in the 1850 Census? It appears that he is their child.

DEATH: "Taylor County in Profile," FHL 975.455 H25t, Vol 1-6: "1860 Deaths, Nov 1860 - "Luranah Harr, 50, 8, 23; John and Ann Carpenter, BP: Mon.; Richard Harr." See IV, 33. NOTE: In this same source were records from "Old Johnny McGee Cemetery or Scranage Cemetery with similar information. See T-4, #10.

ANOTHER CONFLICT: It would appear that Lurana was born in 1811 or 1812 according to the 1850 and 1860 Census records, and more likely 1811 if she was to have turned 49 in December of 1860. NOTE: Her birthdate is calculated from her death records.

ANCESTRAL FILE: On 29 Mar 1997 correction was made to Lurana's birth information from "Abt 1810" to "Abt 18 Dec 1811" and marriage date and place provided to AF#1N3G-KNP.

See C-3, #1 and 2 in the files of Jan Hornick. CONFLICT: The mother, given as "Nancy Miller," conflicts with Lurana's death records (and other records) reporting that her mother was named "Ann." NOTE: "Nancy" is sometimes a variation or nickname of "Ann"
