Name: Anna Louise BERG
Birth: 22 MAY 1898 in Red Lake County, Minnesota
Death: 29 DEC 1988 in Thief River Falls, Pennington County, Minnesota
Change Date: 9 JAN 2016
From Pennington County History (1976): ...We children walked two and one half miles to school in Dist. 154 which is now annexed to the Thief River Falls district. We had wonderful times there and also very good dedicated teachers. My children also atended school there. In 1918 I graduated form Thief River Falls high school and the Teacher Training Dept. I taught school three years. We attended church in St. Hilaire.
In 1922 I married Iver Iverson. He also was born in Rocksbury. He was a grandson of Peter Stene, a pioneer in Smiley Township. We farmed in Rocksbury Townshipin Section 26 SW 1/4. This farm now belongs to our son, Harley, of rural Thief River Falls. His home is in Smiley Township which originally belonged to Halvor Hastveit. We had four children and a daughter, Clara, by Iver?s former marriage. Clara, now deceased, lived in St. Paul and had five children. Adeline, Mrs. Robert Farmes, has one daughter, Edna. Mrs. Eugene Rondorf has four sons and one daughter. Gail, who lives in Brainerd, has two sons and one daughter. Harley ahs four sons and one daughter. Iver died in 1961 after which I have lived mostly in this city. all my children, except Gail, live in or close to Thief River Falls.
From a family history document: ?In 1921, Louise took her brother Fred to Colorado in hopes that the mountain air would help his lung problem, but he did not recover. He died in December 1921. She married Iver Iverson on March 12, 1922. Iver had been doing the Berg?s farmwork ever since Axel and Fred died. Iver?s daughter Clara then came to live with them.
Around this time, Louise?s mother Anna Berg moved to the Kulp place across from the Odegaard?s home and a little west. Harley was born on March 17, 1923 in the house on the Berg homestead where they were living (the same house that Louise was born in). Berg?s farm was just northwest of Iver?s homestead. Iver?s homestead had only one 18?x26? shed on it (which used to be the old Loken house where Roy and Louie were born, later moved to Harley?s homestead) and no open land, so he had to brush and break the land as he went.
Louise contracted tuberculosis and had to go into the Sanatorium in the summer of 1928. People from Moorhead had come to see her. Gina Brandemul (she had roomed with Louise while they were teaching out there) was running behind the car and crying and Harley couldn?t understand why. Louise was there for four years until 1933. Clara helped out for a while, but then she went to work in the Cities. Grandma Berg stayed for about a year and a half. Harley remembers when his mother came back, riding out from town, it seemed so strange to have her in the car because they hadn?t had anyone in the car with them for so many years, and Gladys (Uncle Ben?s daughter) was with them, too. She stayed for a couple of years to keep Louise from doing too much heavy work like washing clothes, etc.
When Louise came home, Grandma Anna Berg went back to her hut (built by Fred Johnson) which she now lived in (just to the east of Iver and Louise?s house, near the east fence line) since she moved from the Kulp place. It was about 20?x24? and a two-story; she slept upsstairs in the summer and slept downstairs in the winter. She had it for storage upstairs, quite a treasure trove up there, Harley says, for Norwegian stamps. She had it closed up while she was at Iver?s.?
