From Pennington County History (1976, by Oscar Odegaard):

Grandfather Anders A. Odegaard was born in Ostre Slidre, Valdres, Norway in 1857, Grandmother born in 1863. They left for America in 1886 with other relatives, landed in New York Harbor on July 3, 1886, got off the boat on July 4, 1886, continued the way west and came to St. Hilaire. The name had been Kolstad, but changed it to Odegaard because there were so many others of the same name. In December 1889, Anders filed a preemption on land in Rocksbury Township. This farm has since remained in the family. There were 12 children in this family. Two died as infants and only one, Ole, my father, was born in Norway in 1886 and came here; others were born in America.

Anders Odegaard was a charter member of St. Pauli Lutheran Church and served as ?klokker.? Norwegian was the language used. Anders was a well built man, stern in his ways and needed to be with such a large family.
