www.pvillage.org has Gilbert?s birthdate as 2 Feb 1861, but a check of the cemetery confirms that it should be 2 Feb 1860. He shares a tombstone with his wife, Sigri, and son Gilbert Melvin, just south of Ole Braaten?s place. His inscription is in Norwegian and impossible now to decipher.
Obtained land grant in Pennington County on 14 April 1894. Accession Nr. MN0560.090. He applied on 22 December 1891 at the Crookston Land Office for Section 31 of Township 153 of Range 42 in Minnesota. He certified that he was a single man over 21 years of age and was a natural born U.S. citizen. His witnesses wre Torkel Anfinson (62 years old) who said Gilbert settled on the land in August 1888 and had a log house, granary, stable, and 40 acres fenced. Value at $525. Torkel Anfinson signed his own name and did not have to make a mark.
Ole Braaten was a second witness who testified to the same as Torkel Anfinson and signed his own name. Note that Ole Braaten is his father-in-law and Torkel Anfinson is his uncle. Gilbert himself testified in 1894 that he was now married at age 32 and had 50 acres under cultivation. He also signed his own name.
