Sunndalsboka Bind IV, pp. 99-109: ?Ole Einarsen Ormset (1875-84). As we have just mentioned, he was born in Tingvoll in 1834 and was in 1867 married to the former farmer's daughter, Ingrid. Children: 1) Ole, born 1868; 2) Jon, born 1870; 3) Edvard, born 1872; 4) Halvor, born 1876: 5) Ingebrigt, born 1878; and 6) Gustav, born 1880.

In the spring of 1880, there was at Ole Einarsen held an execution in which to the creditor Jon Saether was given what he had 'coming to him' in Storviken Nr 2: 441.54 kroner; and at an execution in June of the same year, there was taken from the farm to another creditor 84 kroner. At the same time, there was seized in payment for a debt for rights to the parish priest (what they should have paid him) at which one cow was taken. In October 1884, the farm (that is unit nr 2) at an auction was sold to Ole Sivertsen Lundli for 1,060 kroner. In the spring of 1885, Ole Einarsen with his wife and three children (Halvor, Ingebrigt and Gustav) emigrated to America. ?

    ---------------------------------------------

From Pennington County history book on the Vigen Family History: Times were hard in Norway during the 1870's and 1880's as a severe economic depression engulfed the nation. Thousands of people left the country in search of a better life in the United States. Among those who came were Ole and Ingri Viken, togheter with their five sons: Edward, Iver, Gustav, Ingebregt and Halvor. [emigration listings also include Trond] They went originally to Iowa and later to LuVerne, Minnesota where they worked for farmers in the area. As the sons matured, they went on to seek their fortunes in other parts of the country. Iver stayed in LuVerne, Edward and Gustav went west, and Halvor came to Grand Forks, North Dakota.

At the turn of the century, when townships in Red Lake County were opened for homesteading, Ole, Ingri and Ingebregt came north. Halvor had married Caroline Rosedhl and they lived in Garnes Township, Red Lake County. Iver purchased land northeast of Hazel and had a house built for his parents, but he returned to LuVerne. When the Soo Line Railroad came through to Thief River Falls in 1904, the house stood in the path of the track and had to be moved. The house was later moved to Ole Mathson's farm and was his first store building.

In 1909 Edward came from the west to visit his family, like what he found, and purchased 125 cacres of land east of what is now U.S. Highway 59 in section 20 of Smiley Township. He returned to Oregon to continue working as a logger until 1912 when he returned permanently to Pennington County.

Ingebregt had made his home with Halvor and his family who were then living in Section 29 of Smiley Township and farmed with him until Edward returned. Then he purchased 93 acres joining Edward's land on the south. The two brothers and their parents moved into a small, one-room house on Edward's land and together began farming. Shelter had to be provided for cattle and chickens as farms in those days were self-sustaining. The land had never been cleared so th etask was done with two teams of oxen pulling a walking plow. The oxen were slow and lazy and often needed a gentle prod with a long stick to which a nail had been attached!

By 1916 both Ole and Ingebregt had died leaving only Ed and his mother on the farm. In 1919 the picture changed when Ed met and married Martha Moe, the daughter of Christ and Bertha Moe, also early settlers in the area.
