From Pennington County History (1976): In the spring of 1895, Peter and Martha Nelson of Northwood, ND came to live in Smiley Township on a farm they bought from her uncle. This farm is 2.5 miles east of the then, thriving village of St. Hilaire. Peter Nelson helped haul lumber to build the St. Pauli Church. Martha Nelson was an officer of the Ladies? Aid of that church soon after it was organized. She passed away in 1905 from what could have been appendicitis.
Edwin Nelson was their son and a boy of seven when his mother died. He grew up there with his father and spent his whole lifetime there until he passed away in 1960. He married Evelyn Peterson, a daughter of pioneer settlers, the Oscar J. Petersons, who homesteaded in Smiley Township in 1904. The grandson of Peter Nelson, Orville Nelson and his family, are on the fmaily farm where they make their home.
