From Pennington County History (1976): Oldus Iver Vinji was born in Trondheim, Norway on March 6, 1878. He immigrated to the United States with his father, brother and a sister. Hie brother Ellis changed the name Ness to Vinji after coming to this country. Pa came to Halstad, Minnesota and worked for a minister by the name of Rev. Megrud and was confirmed by him. In about 1895 he took a job on a farm near Hillsboro, ND.

In 1910 he filed on a homestead near Grygla, MN. He and his partner, Mr. Fladeland, started out by foot from Thief River and got as far as Goodridge, when he wanted to turn back, but his partner insisted on going on. At lats they made it to Grygla. It was a hectic walk, through water most of the way. Pa filed on a homestead two miles south of where Grygla now stands.

In 1907, he moved with his dad to Norman county and worked on farms near Halstad and Hillsboro. There he met our mother Anna Snustal, and was married there. After two years he moved to Pennington County and rented a farm in Black River Township. I was born there in 1910. In 1912, Pa bought a farm in Rocksbury Township, one mile north of Hazel, MN. My sister Stella was born there in 1914.

Mother passed away February 8, 1931 and Pa, October 20, 1941. After the death of our father, my sister and I moved to a place east of Thief River in the township of Smiley. We lived there eight months, then sold out and moved into town.
