    Hal was an internationally known research psychologist. He first became known for sleep deprivation studies he conducted while in the US Army in the 1950s. Later research into alcoholism at the end of his life were also well known. H was a full professor at the University of Oklahoma and a Professor Emeritus at the University of Minnesota.
    When Hal died his obituary ran in national papers, including the front page of USA TODAY.
