You have found one of the largest databases dedicated to the families associated with the Germanna Foundation, largely concentrated on the interrelated colonists who came to Fort Germanna under the patronage of Lt. Gov. Alexander Spotswood in1714. I would be happy to make updates with your corrections and additions. If this site is helpful to you, please show your appreciation by supporting the work of the Germanna Foundation at

    Dear Marc,
First let me apologize for taking so long to get this information to you. I am a laboratory technician, and I work long hours.
My sister and I have been exploring our family history off and on for many years. Most of what we did was before home computers were in use, and the information super hi way didn't exist. We gathered our information by going through microfilm of census records, reading obituaries, sending for birth, death, and military records, visiting cemeteries, reading countless books, and, of course, talking with family members. Speaking with our family was, perhaps, the most enlightening. Our family was close nit with many gatherings, and family history was a frequent topic among our aunts and cousins for as far back as I can remember. On this particular line of my father's family, births occurred at 38 to 40 year intervals with only one occurring at 30 years. So, there aren't as many generations between me and Benjamin Patterson as you might imagine. Benjamin Patterson and Jane M. Jones were the actual grandparents of my grandfather, James Patterson Rial. Jane Eliza (Jenny to her family) Patterson and Simon Samuel Rial were the actual parents of my grandfather and grandparents of my father and his sisters. Stories of the exploits of the "Patterson brothers"--sons of Mary Boone Patterson--were told at family gatherings whenI was just a child.
I will list the people, places, and dates as we have them. Please note the occurrence of the name Jane, which has come down from Jane M. Jones.
There is another cousin, that I will not list here, who is named Jane.
I hope you will include the descendants of Benjamin Patterson and Jane M. Jones on your web site. How would we need to present this information for you to include it?
