"Mary Maxwell, born on October 19, 1804 in Georgia had moved as a child with parents to Birmingham area. She reached maturity in Jefferson County, Alabama. Mary married in February 25, 1824 to William Stapp, a widower, in Jefferson County, Alabama. After the marriage, she began making a home and raising a family in Jefferson County, Alabama. Then in the late 1830's, husband, William uprooted the family and moved to the Olney area of Pickens County, Alabama. In Olney, William began a mill and store. During the Civil War, a son died and all of her sons-in-law fought with the confederacy. Her sons also served in the confederacy army. The yankees partially burned the mill and store during a raid through Pickens County. Mary and family lived through the rough years of reconstruction. Mary Maxwell Stapp died on April 11, 1885."
