Speer family was of Scotch Presbyterian descent and according to family tradition lived in Ulster for at least 100 years before coming to America. James was a Covenanter, a Presbyterian sect firmly opposed to all attempts to dominate the individual whether it be through the claim of divine rights of kinsgs to rule or the infallibility of the Roman Pope, or the demands of the Church of England. In America they became ardent patriots, providing soldiers for the French and Indian wars and for the Continental Arum of General Washington. They were also behind the Whiskey Rebellion which resisted prohibitory taxes on processed farm products (whiskey, wine, reserves, etc.) which meant that the frontiersmen could not get their products to the seaboard markets. They rejected slavery and were behind the laws making Pennsylvania slave free. They were devout people, firmly believing in the goodness of God and faith in the future. The Speer family motto is : "Dominus providebit," or the Lord will provide. [Family Tree.ftw, Date of Import: Jul 15, 2001 ]
