Theodore came to America on the Ship Union from Bremen, arriving in New York on 6 Oct 1857 with his mother Elizabeth and three of his brothers - Karl, Wilhelm, and Heinrich. He lived first with his brother Ludwig in New York City. But was in Fort Wayne in 1859 when his oldest son was born, and moved there after the Civil War. Theodore served in the Civil War in Comapny H, Seventh New York Infantry Volunteers, an all-German Regiment, enlisting on 21 Nov 1861. He was an eyewitness to the battle between the Monitor and the Merimac, Mar 1862. His Company joined the Army of the Potomac on the Virginia Peninsula May 1862 where it spent seven days before Richmond 25 June - 1 July, 1862, and was at Fair Oaks 26-29 June, Peach Orchard and Savage Station 29 June, White Oak Swamp and Glendale 30 June, Malvern Hill 1 July. It was at Harrison's Landing until 16 Aug, moved to Fortress Monroe, then to Centreville 16-30 Aug. It was in the Maryland Campaign 6-22 Sept, at the Battle of South Mountain 14 Sept, Antietam 16-17 Sept. It moved to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia 22 Sept, and was on duty there until 30 Oct, with a reconnoissance to Charlestown 16-17 Oct. Then it advanced up Loudon Valley and moved to Falmouth 30 Oct - 17 Nov. On the march from Harper's Ferry to Fredericksburg in Nov 1862, he was seriously injured in a fall. Two men were left with him to bury him if dead or bring him in if not. He suffered after that, and was sent home, and was furloughed 25 Feb 1863. After that he was never was able to do sustained work after that, and received a pension.
