    It was at first assumed that Seneca and Elizabeth Cottrell were the parents of Joseph R. and this Seneca for the following reasons. 1) In the 1850 census a 22 year old Seneca is living with Joseph R. and Mary and he was assumed to be a
    younger brother of Joseph. 2) Joseph and Mary named their oldest daughter Ann Elizabeth. She was thought to be most likely named after her two grandmothers, Ann Vincent Cary and Elizabeth Cottrell. Although the fact that Seneca (the elder)
    didn't die until after 1865 made it questionable as to why Seneca wasn't living with him. Then it was discovered that Seneca the younger's death certificate listed his father as Joseph. Joseph did die before 1850 so it made sense that Seneca
    would be living with another family. But according to the 1830 and 1840 censuses, Joseph did not have a son of the age to be Joseph R. And further, in the 1840 census he did not have a son the correct age to be Seneca, either.

    William Cottrell is not listed in the 1850 census and it is in this census that Seneca, the younger, is living with Joseph R. and Mary Cottrell. Since Seneca, the elder, and his wife are still listed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, there is no
    reason for Seneca, the younger to be living with Joseph R. if he was their son. So Seneca, the younger is also believed to be a son of William.
