Note: Birth: Place and date of birth are still unclear.
Marriage: Date of marriage based on birth year of first child. Place would be in Germany, or Switzerland. This is still to be determined.
Children: John, Ludwig, Tobias, Frederick, Philibina and Maria are mentioned in will abstract. Elizabeth is mentioned but it is unclear whether she was still alive in 1810, when he first wrote the will.
Death: Will abstract gives 1 Dec 1810, as date of death. Upon reading the will, it was dated 1 Dec 1810, and there was a codicil dated 6 May, 1816, and the will was not probated until 16 Aug. 1817. Hartman records give 1816, 1817 as year of death. Do I have a copy?
Miscellaneous: Found a Tobias Hartmann listed as a passenger on the Ship Crawford, which docked in Philadelphia on 23 November 1770. We must assume that he brought his wife and four eldest children with him, since they were born prior to this date. In a book called: SOUTHWEST GERMAN EMIGRATION TO AMERICA IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, compiled by Professor Werner Hacker, I found Tobias Hartman, who emigrated from Zeller Tal in 1770. (Rheinpfalz und dem Saarland). He gave as his source: "Auswanderung aus der Rheinpfalz und dem Saarland", which was supposedly still available. I faxed a man called Konrad Theis Verlag in Stuttgart, Germany for a copy. He replied via internet that it was no longer in print. Perhaps it is in a library in Stuttgart, or somewhere in the Rheinland-Pfalz.
Tobias must have written his will while still in good health. He begins, "...I, Tobias Hartman of Shrewsbury Township, ... being in perfect health of body and of sound memory and understanding, blessed be God for the same, ..." He later revised it on 6 May 1816, making a few changes, i.e. that son Frederick was to cut and deliver firewood to his widow, that she should have "in the place of fifty pounds, one hundred and fifty pounds, that she shall have the interest of said sum of money yearly during her natural life...", and that son Tobias, would replace son John, deceased, as executor of his will. I have a copy of the will. The inventory is interesting. The first page and a third lists items willed to his wife; two thirds of the next page lists items to be sold and includes two caskets, and casket maker tools; and the last page includes many notes outstanding, most of which listed money loaned to his sons. The estate was valued at $2,049.21. There was an accounting by the executors on 12 May, 1818, showing a balance of $1,760., and a further accounting on 14 September, 1824, showing a balance of $584.50. (Film #22155)
