Death Comes Quickly
Rev. John H. Rabe Succumbs to Pleurisy after Short Illness
-- Has Been Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1881
The Rev. John H. Rabe, died, Monday morning, from angina pectoris, with which he was stricken the day before. His death was unexpected and his congregation and host of friends were shocked when the news came. Mr. Rabe came to Yorkville in 1881, when the church with which he has been affiliated for so many years was in its infancy. Their building was what is now used as the school house. Under the direction of Mr. Rabe, a parsonage was erected in 1882, and the work started toward raising funds for a new church. This was accomplished and in 1896 the present edifice was dedicated. A few years ago a pipe organ was installed and the church and surrounding buildings are a credit to the labor of the reverend gentleman, who has passed away. He has been an ardent worker in the church and has taught the school in connection with the parish all these years. A more devoted pastor could not be found and the Rev. Mr. Rabe will be greatly missed by those with whom he has been in such close association.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, May 25, 1856, Mr. Rabe attended the parochial school in that city until he was fifteen years old. he then went to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he spent six years in Concordia College, and then took a three year course in the theological seminary at the same place. Upon his graduation in 1880, he went to Kansas City, where he worked on the board of missions for his denomination. He came to Yorkville in 1881 and was installed as pastor in December of that year.
Mr. Rabe and Miss Mary Henmann were married, February 16, 1882. Mrs. Rabe was a schoolmate of her husband and was also born in Cleveland. These good people have endeared themselves to all who knew them and the loss of the husband is a severe blow to the worthy helpmate. Beside the widow there are six children surviving; Walter, Theodore and Martin, of Chicago; Mrs. Herman Mehling of Duluth, Minnesota; Rudolph and Mrs. Herman Behrens of Yorkville.
The funeral will be held fro the late home at 2 o'clock, Thursday afternoon with interment in the cemetery adjoining the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
