Note: John Schilling (Shilling) is a very elusive person to research. From some Census records we find that he could neither read or write. Census records are very confusing as to his age, and I believe he lied about his age on marriage records to Sally Butler (Sarah Boteler). His daughter, Mary Schilling Wood Dunn, [about 1966] told of him having 4 or 5 first names as was the German custom. She said his first wife was named Butler, and that he had 9 children. She also said his birthday was 6 August and he was 86 yrs old when he died. She knew her parents came from Frederick Co. MD. so that was where we started our search. I can find no record of his death either in WV, or MD. The obit I found has no date of death, no date of birth, no name or date of the newspaper. It was in an envelope sent to Mary Wood, 24 March 1933 from Frederick, MD. It was from J. M. Winpigler. Mary's cousin Mildred Tucker [daughter of Grace Eckenrode Tucker Virts] married James M. Winpigler.
John is buried in Frederick Co. MD. but I have yet to find his grave or cemetery records. (Leslie Mikesell Wood 1999)
E-mail from Grace Wood Householder, 8 Feb 2002 to Leslie Mikesell Wood: "The only thing I remember our father [Harry Hilton Wood] say is that John had red hair."
2002, Some mysteries are solved. Apparently John Schilling was formerly John Shilling.
A John Shilling descendant emailed some info on John & Sara Butler Shilling. Pat Jones is descended from John Shilling & Sara (Sally) Butler (4); Grayson B. Shilling (3); Catherine Mae Shilling Glass (2); Patricia Ann Glass Jones(1). Pat sent her Shilling FTM data that will now be added to this John Shilling/Schilling data base. Her family had no knowledge that John had a second wife. She did not know why John & Sara were not at the same household in the 1900 census. She had no knowledge of a divorce between John & Sara. If there was one, it might have been covered up to protect Sara. John lied on his marriage licence to Mary Jane Eckenrode, he said he was widowed. So he could have been a bigamist. Still a few mysteries to solve. Here are some of Pat's notes for John A. Shilling: "John died at Montevue Hospital in Frederick. At this time Montevue was considered a Charity facility."

John Schilling
"John Schilling died on Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, aged 83 years, 6 months and 18 days. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Mattie Harding and Richard Schilling, Frederick; Mrs. Hattie Dean, Frank Schilling, and Townsend Schilling, Baltimore; Mrs. Sallie Blackiston, of Ohio. Forty grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral arrangements will be announced later."
[This obit was found in Mary Wood Dunn's possessions after her death, with an envelope, sent by J.M. Winpigler, Fredrick, Md. R#5. On the cover of Mary's stationary box was written: "Mrs. James Winpigler, Poolesville, Md." [If John died 22 March 1933 aged 83 years, 6 months & 18 days, his birthdate would be 4 Sep 1849. Maryland Death Certificate for John Shilling lists Mary Eckenrode as his wife.
His parents were listed as John Shilling and Ruth Siers. His birth date as Sep. 17, 1849 and death date 22 Mar 1933. He is buried in Flint Hill Methodist Cemetery. Undertaker: H.M. Snyder of Mr. Airy, MD. He died at Montevue Hospital [a charity facility in Frederick MD.]. [Provided by Patricia Glass Jones]
John's descendant, Grace Wood Householder, said that she went to the Flint Hill Methodist Cemetery in September 2006 but said that it was not kept up & many of the stones were upside down on the ground, too heavy to lift. She was unable to find any Schilling/Shilling graves.
