    !BIOGRAPHY: from Jan Gardner's notes:
Daniel Herboldsheimer was born in Cookstown, Pennsylvania (now Fayette City) on November 2, 1857. At the age of 10 or 11 he moved with his family to Clayton County, Iowa, Millville, Township. Daniel Grew to manhood in Clayton County and at the age of 21 he went to Kansas . Then in the fall of 1879 he moved to Kenesaw, Nebraska where he filed on a homestead. On January 1, 1880 he was married to a young lady that he had met in Millville, Iowa, Sarah Alice Segraves. Sarah had lived across the Mississippi river in Cassville, Wisconsin, with her parents John and Agnes Segraves. Sarah had worked in Millville and crossed the river by ferry, Daniel lived on a farm with his parents about four miles west of Millville. They were married in Hastings, Nebraska and made their in Kenesaw for several more years. Sarah had moved to Hastings with her Mother a short time before. Their first three children were born in Adams County, Nebraska while on the homestead, Daniel August Frederick-October 9, 1881, Alva Henry November 11, 1883 and Florence Isabelle-October 31, 1885. After proving up on the homestead they sold it and moved to Potter, Nebraska in April of 1886. Daniel purchased a farm northeast of Potter. A son Charlie Phillip was born here on December 27, 1887. In 1888 or 1889 Daniel loaded his family and possessions in a covered wagon and moved to Gandy, Nebraska. In the 1880's western Nebraska was still relatively wild and unsettled, Indians were still around, very few people lived in the area and the town of Potter was still just a railroad stop with just a few buildings. I can imagine the trip to Gandy from Potter across country, a hundred mile trip,Gandy is about 30 miles north of North Platte. Kate Mathewson (Daniel's youngest daughter) told me of one of the happenings of the trip. Daniel's son Alva was bitten by a rattle snake some where west of North Platte, they made a wild dash for North Platte and a doctor, giving the boy whiskey all the way. The Doctor told them later that if it wasn't for the whiskey the snake bite would have killed him , but if it wasn't for the snake bite the whiskey would have killed him. While in Gandy my Grandmother, Louisa May was born on August 30, 1890. Twins were born on March 20, 1892-Joseph and Jesse-they died the same day. In 1893 the family returned to the farm at Potter. The family lived in a log cabin until Daniel completed a house built of native stone, he had quarried from the hills not far from the farm. The stone house was completed in 1906 and is still in use today, but no longer owned by the family. The farmstead, house, barn, corrals and several other buildings, all built from native stone by Daniel, is now a Nebraska State Historical Site. Six more children were born after the return from Gandy, Muriel-September 8, 1893, he died 7 days later, Elgin-October 21, 1894, Dessie Hazel-December 20, 1896, John Marsh-February 23, 1899, Iva Mildred-January 3, 1902, Kate Lydia-July 8, 1903. Sarah died on April 25, 1911. Daniel lived on the farm until about 1942 when he moved in with his son Charlie until his death on November 27, 1945. Daniel and Sarah are both buried in the Potter Cemetery. Daniel's sister Lizzie and husband Ed Morrow lived with Daniel after Sarah died. Daniel was known by family and friends as Dan Heimer, using Herboldsheimer only in business transactions. Fred and Alva lived in the Powell, Wyoming area most of their adult lives, Florence, Charlie, Dessie, John and Kate lived in the Potter area all their adult lives.
Louisa lived in Banner and Kimball Counties most of her adult life. Elgin disappeared from home about 1918 and ended up in Myrtle Point, Oregon where he spent the rest of his life. Iva lived in Sidney for several years after she was separated from her first husband, she then remarried and lived in Michigan for a time. She now lives in California with her youngest daughter and is the only one of this generation that is still alive in 1992."
