    ALEXANDER AND MARY HAWKINS THOMAS

    Hi Larry

I sure appreciate the pictures you sent. I will use the one of Alexander and Mary Thomas in my book. The one with Lucy does not have enough detail to print properly, so I can't use it. If it was in better shape, it would be a fantastic photo of the two. I removed some of the white spots, etc, that were on the photo of Alexander and Mary. Alexander was a handsome fellow with a dandy beard!

If you have one of just Lucy, or her with her children, etc, I would like a copy to use. And if you have a picture of an old Alexander Thomas homeplace, farm life scene, etc, I would like to have one of that. And if you happen to have a photo of a brother of sister of Alexander Thomas, that would be great.

Larry, you mentioned you didn't know when Alexander and Mary Thomas came to White County, Arkansas. I'm not sure you have the parents of Mary. So I'm sending you a couple of paragraphs I have in my book.

    ALEXANDER THOMAS MOVES TO ARKANSAS
In 1869 Alexander and Mary moved to Searcy, Gray Township, in White County, Arkansas. Members of his wife’s family moved to Searcy at the same time. In 1870 Alexander and Mary were farmers and did not own any real estate. Living nearby were the families of Mary’s parents, Jacob M. and Elizabeth Hawkins, and of her brothers Emerson M. Hawkins and Renn F. Hawkins. The Hawkins families did not own real estate in 1870.

All the children of Jacob W. and Elizabeth Hawkins were born in Union County, Georgia:

    Elizabeth Hawkins, 1835-

    Mary C. Hawkins-Thomas 1836-1897

    Emerson Manson Hawkins, 1838-

    James Hawkins, 1840-

    John Hawkins 1841-

    Matilda Hawkins-Hicks 1844-

    Benjamin F. Hawkins, 1845-

    Rebecca Josephine Hawkins 1848-

    Fletcher Hawkins 1852-

    Nancy Hawkins 1855-

    HAWKINS REF.:

1850 CENSUS, Union County, Georgia; household 531.
1860 CENSUS, Fannin County, Georgia; household 160, Morganton District.
    1870 CENSUS, White County, Arkansas; households 138, 139, 141, 142 and 143.
    -------------------------------------
Spent Friday in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Gilmer, Fannin and Union counties doing a little genealogy. Fannin County was beautiful Friday; the fall colors were at peak. The county still has a lot of almost-pristine areas. For instance, I went and took a picture of a one-lane dirt road leading to the Colwell Baptist Church, where some of my Thomas folks are buried.

But that scene is fading rapidly now. The white-flight from Atlanta is terrible. They are retiring, coming to the Blue Ridge area of Fannin County and building mansions on top of the mountains, along the clear-water streams. It has degraded the scenery badly over the last five years, and is gaining momentum. Land along a creek where my ancestors once lived is selling for $25,000 per one-half acre.

Because of the land grab, the county is moving out of its historic old courthouse into a huge new one.

So if you want to see the old Fannin County, you'll need to visit before too long.

    Thanks again for the pictures.

    Dean Thomas
