      Carl R. Lane, 79, died; founded contracting firm

      Carl Russell Lane, Co-founder and former owner of Lane Brothers Inc. painting, wallcovering and decorating contractors on West Broad street, died of renal failure Thursday in a local hospital. He was 79 and lived in Richmond.

      In 1946, Mr. Lane and his late brother, Lewis Herbert Lane, founded Lane Brothers Inc. on 210 E. Brookland Park Blvd. They moved the business to 408 W. Broad St. in 1975.

      Mr. Lane was president of the Richmond Chapter of Painting and Decorating Contractors of America from 1975 to 1976.

      Lewis Lane sold is part of the business and retired in 1980.

      Carl Lane retired and sold the business to a son in 1982.

      A Richmond native, he served in the Army?s 6th Armored Division in Europe during World War II and served as sergeant of engineers.

      Mr. Lane participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

      Mr. Lane was a member of Metropolitan Lodge 11, AF & AM, the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies and Acca Temple Shrine.

      He was a charter member of Parham Road Baptist Church.

      Survivors include his wife, Frances Burley Lane; a son, William E. Lane of Glen Allen; and a brother, John W. Lane of Mechanicsville.

      A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

      Carl R. Lane, 79, of Richmond, retired Secretary-Treasurer and former co-owner of Lane Brothers Inc., Painting Contractors, died Thursday, August 25, 1994, in a local hospital. He is survived by his wife, Frances Burley Lane; one son, William E. Lane of Glen Allen; three grandchildren, Bryan, Kelly and Bradford Lane; one brother, John W. Lane of Mechanicsville. Mr. Lane was a member of Metropolitan Lodge No. 11 AF&AM, Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, and Acca Temple Shrine. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27, Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.
