  • ID: I1
  • Name: Link to [link] Another

  • Death: living
  • Event: Click. for photo
  • Event: POOL Link --- description field was used here
  • Event: truncated place field --- Link to POOL
  • Note:
Link to POOL --- is the NOTE form.

The following notes will aid in setting up the above and other WorldConnect data base links. To make any of these active, the option 17 Allow HTML in GEDCOM must be set to "Yes".

Note links will show only if the option 28 Remove Notes is set to "None" or "Living", however if it is set to Living then the note will not display if the person is determined to be living. The note display can still be forced by placing the word "living" in the death date, however, all information like birth date will display since the person will be treated as deceased. Place the note as the "General" or "Record" type rather than as a note on any specific event. An example would look like "Link to <a href="/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=pool&id=I1">POOL</a>." See the NOTE link at the top of these notes.

Source links will show only if the option 29 Remove Sources is set to "None" or "Living", however, if it is set to Living then the source will not display if the person is determined to be living. The source display can still be forced by placing the word "living" in the death date, however, all information like birth date will display since the person will be treated as deceased. Be sure to place the link information in the "Source Title" field so that no information will be surpressed if Notes are "All". Place the source as the "General" or "Record" type rather than as a source on any specific event. An example would look like "Link to <a href="/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=pool&id=I1">POOL</a>." See the SOURCE link immediately after these notes.

Event links will show only on deceased persons, but is independent of the Note and Source settings and is more visible on the web page. The event display can still be forced by placing the word "living" in the death date, however, all information like birth date will display since the person will be treated as deceased. Create an Event with the title "Link to" and verb construct "may be found in". Surpress the "Date" and "Description" fields if you can. Put the link information in the "Place" field. An example of the link information would look like "<a href="/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=pool&id=I1">POOL</a>." Although the link could also be placed in the description field, the place field transfers more consistantly to other programs, but gets truncated in some reports. The birth and other private events may be stored in the notes that you will have turned off. See the EVENT link samples just below the death date above.

Obviously, the EVENt link is the preferable format for visibility on the web page. When using the PLACE field, the Event title will appear first like "Link to POOL" where the title is "Link to" and the place field generates the "POOL". When using the DESCRIPTION field, the Event title will appear last like "POOL link" where the description field generates the "POOL" and the title is "link". The verb construct is NOT displayed on the web page, but does appear in the reports. Many programs CANNOT do the description, therefore use the place field for the link. A verb of "is also found" and a preposition of "in" is used for place.

If the person is living, then the SOURce link should be used to maintain the integrity and proper handling of the data base information. Place ALL of the link text in the source title. A string like "(see source link)" can be prefixed or appended to the name using NPFX or NSFX to call attention to the source link which displays at the bottom of the web page.

In all of the above examples "db=pool" refers to the POOL WorldConnect data base and the "id=I1" refers to the first person in that data base. You will want to modify the link to suit your needs.

Please be aware that some field length limits in genealogy programs may prevent long link HTML code. Typically the field may allow only a certain number or kind of characters which may restrict some links. The program may warn that certain HTML characters are not allowed in the field or display some other sort of warning. [Description = 120, Place = 120, Title = 121, Author = 121, . . . whereas Text fields are often unlimited.]

A simpler, more direct method of WorldConnect linking may be available in the future. This may involve the automated recognition of an EVENt of TYPE Link to, POOL, I1 or PLACe Link to, POOL, I1, or a similar suffix.
