  • ID: I14824
  • Name: Catherine PHOENIX [or PHENIX]
  • Surname: Phoenix
  • Given Name: Catherine
  • Suffix: [or PHENIX]
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: 31 Dec 1768 in Bedminster,Somerset,NJ
  • Death: 17 May 1835 in Dansville, Livingston, NY
  • Burial: Greenmount Cemetery, Dansville, Livingston, NY
  • _UID: 957DFD12C2C19742B976D845A35812794F9A
  • Note:
Catherine has not been proven to be the daughter of John Phoenix and Anne Lane, but, based on the dates, place and naming patterns, I believe she was. Anyway, I am leaving her here until proven otherwise.

Catherine cannot be daughter of Andrew because he had a son John b. in April of 1768 whose birth was recorded at the Dutch Reformed Church at Kingston, NY. That date almost certainly also means that our 'Captain John' is not the same John who was son of Andrew. John son of Andrew was about 4 or 5 years younger than our 'Captain John', anyway, if you believe the obit, which in 1839 calls him in "his 67th year". That would place his dob around 1772/73.

This posting was online and has not been verified by me:

"James Faulkner, born Cambridge, [Washington Co] NY, 21 Jan. 1790, was the son of Samuel Faulkner (according to an online tree Samuel was b. 26 SEP 1765 in Bedminster, Somerset Co, NJ.) and Catherine PHENIX (according to an online tree she was b. 31 DEC 1768). He married, at Dansville, NY, 12 May 1812, Minerva Hammond, and was a prominent citizen of North Dansville, Livingston Co., NY. I do not know the names of his brothers and sisters, but I have a record of his descendants for several generations, from genealogies, wills, and land records.
Samuel FAULKNER died in Geneseo, then part of Ontario County in 1805. A wife, Catherine and children were living but the children were not named in the probate material.
Abstract of the Will of James Faulkner, of Dansville, dated 3 Sept. 1878, proved 28 Feb. 1885"

Catherine is a name that is used often in the Phoenix family. A note in the "Phoenix Genealogy" on file at the Somerset Historical Society has this statement "Mrs. James Faulkner of Dansville NY feels sure that her name was SUTPHEN, but neighbors who lived near her say that her name was Anne LANE." That is proof that there is a connection between these 2 families.

In 1820, James Faulkner, Canisteo, Steuben, NY, was on the same page of the census as Robert Robinson, whose recorded marriage to 'Widow Anne Phoenix' in 1780 was in the Zion Lutheran Church in Hunterdon Co NJ. I do not think this is a coincidence. I believe that possibly Catherine Phoenix moved there with her mother and stepfather. Also, the marriage of James Faulkner to Minerva Hammond in Dansville places these people in Steuben Co NY by 1812.

Steuben County Borders Yates County (North), Ontario County (North), Chemung County (East), Schuyler County (East), Tioga County, Pennsylvania (South), Potter County, Pennsylvania (Southwest), Allegany County (West), Livingston County (Northwest) .
