Silas became a magistrate or a justice of the peace in Washington County, Georgia, authorized to perform marriages, as evidenced by the following wedding announcement that appeared in the local newspaper on Jan 12, 1856.

In Washington County, on the evening of the 12th instant, by Silas L. Daniel, Esq., Mr. Jesse J. Skinner, of Burke County, to Miss Eliza A. E., daughter of Richard S. and Temperance Brown, of the former place.

[Nota Bene: The above notice was incorrect. John F. Mason was never the ward of Silas Daniel. It was the minor orphan sons of John F. Mason (George Lee Mason and James Daniel Mason) who were the wards of Silas Daniel.]
