NOTE: Obviously, someone other than George gave information about him to the census enumerator, and just as obviously George never made his marital status or his age clear to his landlady because he was not widowed in 1930 and he was 62. In fact, both of his wives outlived him. His first wife, Octavia Tyner, from whom he was divorced, lived until 1951. His second wife, Mamie (Mason) Sherouse, lived until 1958, and George was still married to her when he died 3 Jan 1940.

Note: Funeral Today of George SherouseFuneral services for George E. Sherouse, 73, who died suddenly early yesterday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Dickson, at 212 East Cheves Street, where he boarded will be held this afternoon at 8 o'clock at Waters Funeral Home and will be conducted by Dr. W. R. Alexander, pastor of the First Baptist church.
The interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
A native of Florida, Mr. Sherouse had been a resident of Florence for the past 17 years. He was a retired salesman. Mr. Sherouse had just returned to Florence from a visit with friends in Tarboro, N. C. over the holidays and was stricken just as he entered the house of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Dickson.
Mr. Sherouse was a devoted member of the First Baptist church and took an active part in its work. He was especially interested in the Pettigrew Men's Bible class. Mr. Sherouse was popular among a wide circle of friends, who will regret to learn of his death. He was generally known as a fine, Christian gentleman. One of his hobbies was the cultivation of flowers.
Active pallbearers will be John Hales, J. H. Bane, Jack McNeil, H. G. Slone, D. T. Taylor and John Galloway. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. E. M. Hicks, W. Marshall Bridges, L. B. Harper, Charles E. McWhite, Charles B. Williams.
The following memers of Pettigrew Men's Bible Class will serve as an honorary escort: W. B. Covington, W. J. Revel, A. H. Dickman, W. W. Wilklus, J. W. Jones, E. Dargan McKnight and W. P. Davis.
