  • Education: 1869-1871 Forsyth, Monroe County, Georgia
  • Note: Mary attended the old Monroe Female Academy, which was later renamed Bessie Tift College, then Tift College. ( The school was bought by Mercer University in the 1970s and closed.)  In 1869, 1870 and 1871, eldest daughter Mayme Vandella "Mary" attended the Monroe Female College (later Bessie Tift College, then Tift College) in Forsyth, Monroe County, Georgia.  Three handwritten receipts made out to Dr. B. D. Smith and signed by college president S. G. Hillyer indicated the cost of education in that era.  One receipt dated 17 Nov 1869 was for $269.55, the total amount due for the 1869 school year. Another receipt dated 7 Feb 1870 was for "$40.00 on account of board for his daughter.  "The third receipt dated 3 Jun 1871, was for "$25.00 on account."  Mary had to quit school within three months of completing her courses and graduating when her mother became ill. 12

    WEDDING NOTICE

Through the courtesy of Dr. and Mrs. B. D. Smith of this county, I've had the pleasure of being present on Thursday last at the marriage celebration of their accomplished daughter, Mary, and Dr. George L. Mason.  The marriage ceremony was performed in an impressive manner by the Rev. Dr. Hillyer, Prof. of Belles Lettres of Monroe Female College, who with his amiable lady, had specially come down to grace the occasion, the lovely bride having been a pupil of his, while receiving her collegiate education.

  • Event: Background
  • Note: After John Iwin J. Bridges abandoned his family circa 1892, supposedly because his three oldest step-sons ran him off, both john and Mary (Smith) Mason Bridges later remarried, but they never bothered to obtain a divorce.  Mary used the 7-year statute of limitations regarding abandonment of family either to have her marriage to John Birdges declared null and void, or to have him declared legally dead (but most probably the former). 12
