"The best account of my great-grandfather Saye that I have procured is that he probably came over from England about the year 1755. Among the immigrants that came over with him was a family by the name of Hodge. After their arrival in Pennsylvania, he married Mary Hodge. The Hodges and Richard Saye moved to York District, South Carolina (counties were called districts at that time). There in the graveyard of Fair Forest Church lie the remains of my great-grandmother Hodge, and I suppose many of her descendants."

However, a deed recorded in Union County, South Carolina Deed Record Book B, p. 141 showed Roan (Rowan) County, North Carolina to be Richard's residence in 1773. In Union County. Heritage -- South Carolina, p. 129, an article states that Richard and his wife Mary moved from Pennsylvania to Burke County, North Carolina and lived for a while on the banks of the Catawba River. (Burke County. was formed from Rowan County. in 1777). Later, Richard and Mary moved to South Carolina and settled on the banks of Mitchell's Creek in Union County.
Asbury W. Saye wrote that Richard was doing well in South Carolina when the Revolutionary War broke out. He was regularly in military service until he fell in the Battle of Savannah (Georgia) which was from Sept. 22 until Oct. 20, 1779. The article in Union County.
