Additions & corrections welcome, especially now that autosomal DNA results allow me to correct and refine my work. I am not related to and am not a chief compiler of every family in this database. Although the majority of the labor reflected here is my own, I sometimes borrowed from others, especially on associates of my families whom I searched long ago. Where I have mistakenly not credited another researcher, I would appreciate a contact so that I can improve this.

  • ID: I421
  • Name: William Tompkins
  • Given Name: William
  • Surname: Tompkins
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 1772
  • Death: 25 Oct 1816 in Varysburg, Town of Sheldon, Genesee, NY
  • Burial: Varysburg Cem, Varysburg, Sheldon, Wyoming, NY
  • Note:

    YEAR OF BIRTH:
    1800 census age 26-45, b. 1755-1774
    1810 census age 26-45, b. 1765-1784
    Tombstone age 44 in 1816, b. 1772

The censuses limit his birth to 1765-1774, while the tombstone specifies 1772.

PLACE OF BIRTH: There is no extant written record giving a place of birth for William Tompkins. His business partner, admininstrator, and brother-in-law Robert Tompkins (whom I carry as a brother to William Tompkins) is reported by the 1850 census mortaility schedule as having been born in CONNECTICUT, while a surviving daughter of this same brother claims that her father was born in NEW YORK on the 1880 census.
There is also an 1850 census listing of 1781 birth somewhere in CONNECTICUT for the James Tompkins who is party to William's probate package and whose son later gets land from Robert Tompkins. I also believe that this James Tompkins was a brother to William and Robert.
The 1855 NY state census listing for Deborah TOMPKINS Jolly Stackus also says that she was born in CT, although this disagrees with the 1850 & 1860 Federal census listings

FATHER: No father is known for William Tompkins. There is no older male Tompkins in the area where William and his siblings lived as young adults. The father should have been born no later than 1752 (assuming he is at least age 20 when William was born), although he can be older, perhaps as much as 20 or 25 years older. This limits a search to Tompkins males born roughly between 1725 and 1750. Since William seems to have a sister Phebe who was born in 1783, then William's father likely died at some point after 1782 but prior to 1795 when William begins to leave his own records.
There are now a number of online trees claiming that there were 2 separate men named William Tompkins in Cayuga Co. at the same time circa 1800, with one being the father of the other and born around 1750. WRONG! There was only one - check the records.
Notice that William and Robert Tompkins were wealthy for their time and place beginning as young adults. This certainly implies that they may have had some sort of inheritance or guardian to get them going. Note also that both of them were elected to local office in the militia. They certainly were not destitute and friendless orphans. Suspect that they have 'hidden' family present in this county.

MOTHER: No mother is known for William Tompkins. If the same woman was the mother of all of the group of Tompkins who seem to be siblings, then she bore a last child by a nameless Mr. Tompkins in 1783, at which time she was no older than about 45, meaning that she was probably not born earlier than 1738 and was alive at least through 1783. If William was her first child, and she bore him in her early 20's, then her birth could be between 1738 and 1752. If - and only if - she was alive and living in the area where the Tompkins siblings began to make records, then she had re-married, for there is no older female named Tompkins in any record of this area.

MARRIAGE: No later than Dec 1794-Jan 1795 - dated by birth of first child Rachel Tompkins on 10 Sep 1795. William was approximately age 22 at this time. Since first wife Anna Freeman has a known date of birth on 9 Feb 1777, then she would have been 17 at marriage and 18 at Rachel's birth. Due to age, this is very likely a first marriage for both parties, meaning that both probably lived with a parent or guardian immediately prior to the marriage.

William buys into Genesee Co from William Vary, the original purchaser, in 1816 and promptly died. Note that Robert Tompkins (who already was dealing in adjacent land back in Cayuga Co) also had a transaction. Descent from William is goiing to have to be proven by sale of his property.

William Tompkins, died 25 Oct 1816, aged 44 years
Lucy Tompkins, wife of William Tompkins, d. 11 Jun 1881, aged 37 yrs.

Don't get too excited about this indicating the correct year of birth for William; the info on Lucy is patently wrong, casting doubt on this reading of William's stone. Lucy left a will in Wyoming County, made 25 May 1844, at which time she was 37 years old. She named sisters & decd. brother Gideon. Lucy was therefore born about 1807, and a dau to William, not a wife.

"CEMETERIES...The original ground of the Varysburgh cemetery consisted of half an acre given by William Tompkins in 1814 or 1815. One-fourth of an acre has since been added.
July 3d, 1877, the Varysburgh Cemetery Association was formed. The cemetery now comprises 2 and a half acres.
The first interments were those of 2 infants. The first interment of an adult was that of William Tompkins, who died October 25th, 1816. Two large wild cherry trees are growing out of the grave."

William & dau Lucy are there. Might suspect that the 2 infant graves were also related to William, as he gave the land.

There is a grave and probate file for a Leonard Parker Tompkins in Jackson Co, MI. He was an elder of the Freewill Baptist Church, as shown by the obituary of his wife. He's son to "deceased brother Gideon" of Lucy's 1844 will. Gideon last appeared on the 1840 Census of Jackson Co, MI. His widow Maria md. Alden Luce as a second wife in Dec of 1842.

    COMPILED GENEALOGY: TOMKINS-TOMPKINS GENEALOGY: Tompkins Robert A. & Clare F.; 1942; p. 61; LDS Film #1321290, item 3
"752. William Tompkins parentage unknown, m. Freeman, had Tompkins
    753. William Freeman Tompkins b. 1812, m. Caroline Leach, d. 1900,
d/o William Leach & Esther Southworth, went Iowa then to
    Washington D.C., where he d."

This entry applies to Wm. Tompkins of Cayuga & Genesee Cos, NY, as proven by the deed of Winslow Leach and wife Esther (Southworth) to William F. Tompkins and wife Caroline, Cayuga Co Deed Book , p.
Note that Wm. Tompkins had a neighbor Gideon Freeman (01101/01101, so b. bef 1755) in the 1800 Census; Gideon Freeman (wf. Eunice Ford) named a daughter Anne--no married name given--in his 1809 will of Scipio, Cayuga Co. Wm. Tompkins & wf. Anna named children Gideon & Eunice.
There are multiple land transactions between Wm. Tompkins & the Freemans. William's deeds prove that he had wife Anna through an 1812 deed, then he sold property without a wife in 1814, then again in 1815 with wife Sally.

Needless to say, none of the Cayuga Co Tompkins are listed in the Tompkins genealogy. That would be too easy. There are later Tompkins of Genesee Co, but they were original immigrants from Ireland and came long after ours had died and/or moved on; these others were also in another part of the county entirely.

THE CLAN OF TOMKYNS. VOL. 1 Robert A. Tompkins. p. 181 (original found at Los Angeles Public Library, copy in possession of descendant Leslie Smith Collier, Fall 1998).

"1772. William Tompkins and ----- Freeman? had of Scipio NY record obscure

    4098. Esther C. b. NY 1820"

Gee, thanks, R.A. Tompkins. I didn't get this until years after I had proven and disproven everything written. At least he improved the information on son William Freeman Tompkins (and this time he got that part right, but then again, someone else sent it to him). The book goes backward to claim my William as a son to "843. Sylvester Tompkins and these all tentative, otherwise they are unidentified." William's own listing under Sylvester says, "1772. William b. 1772 d. Oct 25 1816 at Varysburg NY md Sarah C. b. 1776." A few lines above William it names Mary, also a daughter to Sylvester, who lived on the 1850 census of Dutchess Co. with Mrs. Sarah C. Tompkins "who we believe was widow of William Tompkins of Varysburg NY."
I find all of this hysterically entertaining given that William's probate specifically lists his children, of whom the Lucy and William Freeman Tompkins listed for him are only two. Another "child" Warren is written about in the Genesee Co. history book, where it specifically says that Warren was a child of James Tompkins and wife Clarissa Stoddard. I mentioned James in my first note to you as having come from Cayuga and possibly being a brother to my William. But James' probate, plus this mugbook article, clearly say that Warren belonged to James. And I haven't a clue where Robert A. Tompkins dug up a daughters Mary and Esther, for they didn't exist in my family, nor in that of James.
Robert A. Tompkins didn't care that William spent most of his life in Cayuga Co. and connected him to this Sylvester Tompkins based on God-knows-what-flight-of-fancy. William certainly never left any records with any of the other children listed for poor Sylvester, nor did any of them go to Cayuga Co.

    Checking back on allied families:

    2. David Irish family (Freewill Baptist minister of Tompkins churches in Cayuga & Wyoming Cos) was early Little Compton RI, then Westerly, RI, then Dutchess Co NY, then Stillwater in Saratoga Co, then 1795 to Cayuga Co. He also founded the FW Baptist church in Varysburg.

    5. Asa Branch from Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA DB O.A., p. 230
    6. Thos Lapham immediatly from Easton, Washington Co--purchased prop. jointly with Gideon Freeman. Deed of entry typed under Gid. Freeman.
Note that wife of Sylvanus Hussey was a Lydia Lapham, b. 1753 in Smithfield, Providence, RI - maybe sister, cousin, etc.
    7. Benj. Whipple from Rutland Co, VT Ancestral File
    8. James Glover immediately from Oxford, Chenango Co, & from "the New England States" before that. DB M.A., p. 356 & HIST. CAYUGA CO. James Glover b.
    9. Daniel Brightman (sold Wm. & bro-in-law Jno Freeman their first land Cayuga Co) was md. to Elizabeth Brownell; she b. Little Compton, RI & sister of Perez Brownell of Cayuga Co. Brownell Gen.

Note that there is a James Tompkins, son of John Tompkins who was b. Londonderry, Ireland, censused in Cambridge, then Albany/now Washington Co in 1790. No other children to this John Tompkins are given in the Tompkins Gen....certainly a possibility.

    [speaking of Zebulon Luce]
"Rachel (Tompkins) Luce, his wife, was born Sept 10, 1795, a daughter of a farmer owning 1,600 acres of land at Ferrysburg, NY."

Source of info in Luce genealogy was late 1800's correspondence between the Luce compiler & children of Zebulon Luce & Rachel Tompkins. They were unable to give their grandmother's last name but supplied "Anna" as a first name.

See RIN 17831 for deed of John F. Tompkins & wf. Rebecca selling land in Jackson Co, MI, while living in Schoharie Co, NY. This John F. seems to go back to the Westchester Co Tompkins.

PERIODICAL ARTICLE: "Historical Wyoming" October 1979, Vol. XXVI, No. 2, Warsaw, New York and the name of the article is "A Village in the Valley" authored by Anita Ripstein. The second part was continued in the January 1980 issue.

    "THE SECOND OLDEST HOUSE
The house now occupied by Louis W. and Dorothy Kehl Urwin, was the site of the pioneer home of William Thompkins, who is believed to have been its builder. The exact date of construction is unknown, but it is thought to have been around the same time that the Vary house was constructed. Mrs. William (Lucy) Thompkins resided here in the 1830's and the next known occupant was Dr. Lindorf Potter . . . ."

    "THE VILLAGE CEMETERY
The original ground was donated by William Thompkins upon the death of his son. He was the first adult to be buried here dying Oct. 25, 1816 at the age of 44 years. Mr. Thompkins, who was a soldier of the War of 1812, it is said, also donated land upon which a church was to be erected. Years after his death two wild cherry trees grew from his grave. By 1880, 2 and one-half acres had been added to the original one-half acre. The first cemetery association was formed July 3, 1877 at a meeting held at the schoolhouse. The first trustees were: Gad C. Parker, James H. Fillmore, Dexter S. Davis, Herman J. Conger, Jeffrey F. Thomas and John Coughran. On June 27, 1941 the former North and South Cemetery Association joined to reorganize into one association, the Varysburg Cemetery Association . . . ."
