    Polly and Nicholas lived on a farm which was located in the west holdings of her husband's grandfather, the first Nicholas Beard. It was near Chewsville. The farm was profitable as, even after the Civil War's end, the 1870 census showed Nicholas had real estate worth $15,590 and personal property of $5,350. The last communion record at Beards Church was 1874. Both are buried in Cavetown Reformed Church. Nicholas Beard is listed as 68 years old 6 months and 12 days with a death date of 7/7/1877. The couple had ten children, all born in Maryland...eight of whom reached adulthood.

    In the name of God, Amen. I Nicholas Beard of Washington County, in the state of Maryland NICHOLAS BEARD, DECEASED being in perfect health of body and of sound mind, memory and understanding, considering the certainty of death, and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desirous to settle my worldly affiars, and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me home, do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament, in the manner and form following, that is to say; First, and principally, I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God, and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors, hereinafter named, and after my debts and funeral charges are paid. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Mary Beard my homestead, or the farm on which I now reside, together with the Mountain Lot, known by the name of the upper lot, and bounded by the lands of I. Davis, Muetzer and others. to have and hold the aforesid premises during the time of her natural life or widowhood, I give; and bequeath to my beloved Mary, all the furniture in the house to use it as in her judgment may seem best. It is my will and desire all the rest and residue of my estate, both real, and personal, be disposed of at public sale by my executors, as soonafter my death as convienient, and be equally divided among all my children to have and share alike, I give and bequeath my son Henry Beard's portion of my estate to his wife, Ann Beard, and her heirs. It is my will and desire that after the death or widowhood of my wife that all the balance of my real estate be sold by my executors and equally divided amongst my heirs. viz. Ann Beard and heirs, Isaiah Beard, John W. Beard, Elizabeth M. married to William Hause (Hanse), Silas W. Beard, Margaret E. married to David Harp, and Alice V. married to Daniel Garver to share and share alike. And lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my sons John W. Beard, Silas W. Beard, and my son-in-law David Harp to be my executors of this my last will and testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made, ratifying and confirming this and none other, to be my last will and testament. I give not only the power to sell to my excutors but also the power to execute good and sufficient deeds to the purchase or purchasers. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal, this eighth day of January; in the year one thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven.
