I am a descendent of Simeon Adams Dunn and am working on trying to sort out the multitude of James Dunns who were mentioned in early records of the Church. Simeon Adams Dunn is thought to have a brother, James Dunn b. 27 Jun 1810 in Groveland, Livingston, New York. Over the years and many family group sheets and compilation of records several James Dunns seem to have been combined together. Regarding the James Dunn who served in the Mormon Battalion. Based on this Pension application which is not on I think he is the James Dunn b. 1788.
pension record: James Dunn pvt. Co. C. Brown's Co. Mormon Battalion. On 28 Nov 1853, James Dunn aged sixty-six years appeared. Resident of Great Salt Lake County. He was a private in Co. C., Capt Brown, Mormon Battalion. Enlisted 16 July 1846 at Council Bluffs, Iowa. Mustered out at Los Angeles, California on the 16th day of July 1847. Applied for an invalid pension. Also listed in the Sick group with Captain Willis [I do not have the full pension copy]
28 Nov 1853 when James Dunn appeared to apply for a pension related to Service in the Mormon Battalion he gave his age as 66 years [born 1787/88]. He stated his wife was Thirza or Wirza [difficult to read] and his children were: Sarah Jane age 4, Emanuel age 2, and Mary Elizabeth age 8 months. These children were totally dependent on him. If I can get a copy of the pension application I will send it to you.

I have chosen this James Dunn as the one who served in the U.S. Mormon Battalion. The conjecture is that USMB James Dunn is a brother-in-law to USMB Andrew Jackson Shupe and USMB James Wright Shupe. All served in Company C. I am also claiming that he had a daughter Elizabeth Ann Dunn who married William Garner who also joined the Battalion in Company A. Mrs. James Dunn and her daughter Elizabeth Ann Garner did not emmigrate to Utah and are supposed to have died in Pottawattamie county Iowa. They could have died during the battalion march since conditions were harsh on those staying the winter in Iowa, but they may have died a few years later. In 1849 James married in Pottawattamie county, Thirza Shupe, sister to USMB Andrew Jackson Shupe and USMB James Wright Shupe. ~Vern Taylor

James Dunn enlisted as a private in Company C of the U.S. Mormon Battalion in 1846. He was on detached service from 10 Nov 1846 with Lieutenant Willis' Pueblo detachment. As such he would have entered the Salt Lake Valley 29 July 1847. He died before 1854 when the pension records stop. He is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery at San Bernardino, California.

JAMES DUN (Tyler's list, JAMES DUNN) Private. On detached service since Nov. 10, 1846, by Battalion Order No. 16. Mustered out with detachment, to date July 16, 1847, as JAMES DUNN.
The soldiers of the battalion who arrived in the Salt Lake valley this day July 29, 1847 included: James Dunn.

Our Pioneer Heritage Vol 11 page 400. James Dunn born 6 June 1810 (sic), died Utah.

He can also be confused with USMB Thomas James Dunn a PVT, CPL in Company B who settled in Utah and was bishop of the North Ogden Ward 1851-1863. He was born 1822 New York and died in Utah.

    He is also mentioned in:

I am assuming that James was living when the sealing was done in the President's Office in 1855. As far as I know they were not doing sealings for the dead at that time. The pension would indicate he was still living in Nov. 1853. I cannot find any record of a burial in Utah or San Bernardino.

This still seems somewhat strange as this James Dunn would have been 59 years old when he enlisted in the Mormon Battalion. It seems rather old, but not impossible. Also Thirza Shupe is 35 years younger than James Dunn b. 1788.
