Here is a piece of what I have. We think the connection goes on to Thomas Farmer 1594 who came to Jamestown area about 1619. I just had a DNA test and it seems to match at least three others that come from for sure Benjamin Farmer 1716.

    Notes for WILLIAM FARMER:

member of Illinois 5th Cav enlisting Dec23, 1863 at Olney IL and died in service. His name incorrect in the Adjutant General Report. Falsely listed as Former. Affadavits available for proof, by two men who knew him in order for Anna to get the pension.

William's parentage was not proven definitely as of 12/20/2005 and may never be. The closest proof available is that John and Elizabeth Farmer of Gibson County IN sold 40 acres of land to William Farmer for $200 on 7/18/1843. The deed never mentions that the two are related though. Yet John sells land first to his oldest son Forest, then follows this later by a sale to William. I assume these are both his sons and he gives them land as they reach adulthood. He probably did not want to get into the legal mess he experienced when his own father Stephen died never having legally sold him the land he lived and worked as a young adult in Charlotte County VA.

William's birth mother is questionable. He may have been a son from John's first wife, name unknown, or from Elizabeth J Dill. Until such time as I find a death date for the first wife this fact will remain an issue. I believe William was a son of the first wife and his birth may have been the cause of her death. The History of Gibson County IN indicates Elizabeth Dill and John Farmer brought four children with them, only Forris clearly named. The county history also suggests Elizabeth, like wife #1, may have been a bride the first time she arrived in Indiana in 1822. In the 1820 census John has a daughter, likely Patsy born 1818. The other two children may have been Elizabeth, born 1821 and William, born 1822. Elizabeth Dill was much younger than John Farmer. She may have married John shortley after William's birth and his first wife's death so John had a homemaker and mother for his children. She would have been needed by John and his four children from his prior marriage to manage life in Indiana.

Sometime between 1860 and 1863 the family moved to Greene County Illinois because that is when William enlisted in the Illinois Calvary. Daughter Florinda's obituary says the family came to Illinois in the Spring of 1863. William now has one additional child, our ancestor, William Butler Farmer. This child is only 8 months old when his dad goes to war. Since William dies during the war, William Butler never knows his father.

The Civil War affected every family in America in some way. William Farmer chose to enlist in the Illinois Calvary, 5th Regiment, Company H, as a private on December 23, 1863 at Olney, Illinois for a three-year term. He mustered in the same day at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois on December 23, 1863. His military papers state he was officially assigned a position through the Alton, Illinois despot office on January 14, 1864. He reported for active duty on January 31, 1864. William is listed as born in Smith County Tennessee, 43 years old, 5' 9" with a fair complexion, blue eyes and gray hair. His occupation is carpenter, although he is also shown on other military documents as a farmer. His residence is Wilmington (today known as Patterson), Greene County Illinois, 10th Enumeration District. He was paid $60 for enlisting and was given $2 in premium pay.

William was involved in the battle of Black River, at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He died April 3, 1864 of Pneumonia at the Regimental Hospital at Clear Creek, Mississippi. He is buried in a mass unmarked military at Bovina, Mississippi. It is located near the original site of the Clear Creek Regimental Hospital.

    Notes for ANNA JANE FIELDS:

1880 census shows that she adopted James Romine an 11 yr old. It appears that she might have been named after her grandmother Anna Lewis

Pension from civil war #136514 and claim no. 82492 was pension number.
