16th Infantry Regiment, recruited in Greenville County, was organized and mustered into Confederate service in December, 1861. It moved to Charleston and for a time was stationed at Adams Run under General Hagood. During December, 1862, the unit was ordered to Wilmington, North Carolina and in May, 1863, to Jackson, Mississippi where it was assigned to General Gist's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. After sharing in the defense of Jackson, it was stationed at Rome, Georgia, during the Chickamauga Campaign. Later it joined the Army of Tennessee, fought in the Atlanta Campaign, and endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee. The 16th ended the war in North Carolina. In December, 1863, it totalled 559 men and 452 arms, lost many in Tennessee, and surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Charles J. Elford and James McCullough, Lieutenant Colonel W.B. Ivor, and Major Charles C. O'Neill.

17th Infantry Regiment was formed early in 1862 with men from Barnwell, York, Chester, Lancaster, and Fairfield counties. It served on the coast of South Carolina, then moved to Virginia. During the war it was brigaded under Generals Evans, Elliott, and Wallace. The regiment saw action at Second Manassas, South Mountain, and Sharpsburg, and later fought at Kinston, North Carolina, and Jackson, Mississippi. Returning to South Carolina, the 17th became part of the garrison at Fort Sumter and during the spring of 1864 rejoined the Army of Northern Virginia. It continued the fight in the Petersburg trenches north and south of the James River and in various conflicts around Appomattox. This unit lost sixty-two percent of the 304 at Second Manassas, forty-three percent of the 141 at South Mountain, and thirty-two percent of the 59 at Sharpsburg. In September, 1863, it contained 324 effectives, and there were 135 casualties at the Petersburg mine explosion. Many were disabled at Sayler's Creek and 9 officers and 110 men surrendered in April, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Fitz William McMaster and John H. Means, Lieutenant Colonels John R. Culp and R.S. Means, and Majors John W. Avery and Julius Mills.

I do have some info.I have some family pictures and have newspaper cliping for Thomas and Mary, just have to find them.

Thomas and family moved here from Brevard.(Brevard, Transylvania, North Carolina) They lived in a small house on the Deaver Eatate, A cousin from Wash. State and I took pictures of what was left about 30 years ago. During Cicil War Thomas and a Mr Killian operated cloth plant, making cloth for uniforms.

I can remember going to Jeromes funeral at Mapel Grove.
    will write more later.
