Messages from Genforum.com; Garmon Family Genealogy Forum:

Joseph and Margaret GARMON HOWELL had 11 children: John, Joseph, Elizabeth, Henry, Eli, Margaret, William, Isaac, Evan, Michael, and Eleanor. Henry married Mary MILLER and had children: Nelson, Evan, Nellie, John, D. Collins, and Emiline. This family originated in Henrico County, VA and migrated through TN and on in to TX. If anyone has these family lines I'd love to exchange info with you. Dana

    Dana,
Hello, I come from the Joseph III,son of Joseph and Margaret Garmon. I do have a problem though, I have Joseph II as being married twice, first to Ester Suggs and I also have my Joseph III being from that union. Anyway Joseph III married Sylvia Robinson abt. 1789 and they had the following children.. Mary ,Elizabeth, Isaac M., Archibald Huston, James Monroe and I even have a reference to a Joseph O. Howell IV. I have traced Joseph II all the way back to the King of Wales who was King of Wales from 844-878. This is a very interesting family. I continue my line from James Monroe Howell who married Tabitha Secrest and had my Great-grandfather Hampton Caldwell Howell who married Mary Jane Hudson and had my grandfather Daniel Boger Howell. Daniel was married twice and had children from both wives. I am from the second marriage, where he only had two children. I am also interested in Margaret Garmon because I am finding more info that puts me being from that wife of Joseph II. I would be interested in any info you have on this lineage.
    Thanks, Cheryl

Dana, my GGGGgrandfather's brother John Kiser married Eleanor Howell the last child you listed of Margaret Garmon and Joseph Howell. John was born 5 Jan 1790 and died 11 Jul 1868. Eleanor was born 20 Mar 1791 and died 25 Nov 1854. They had 10 children. John's grandmother by the way was Fanny Garmon who married Peter Kiser. Many have been looking for the origin of Peter and Fanny. There are several other Kiser/Garmon marriages. The Howell lineage can be found at the following web site http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/l/i/n/Mary-C-Lindholm/index.html. (this redirects to: for Mary Catherine Lindholm-Gunter, 1256 Admiralty Boulevard, Rockledge, Florida 32955-5207, (407)631-0693, Babins@Prodigy.net) vt.
I would be interested in the Garmon ancestors of Margaret Eleanor Garmon. The dates were from Elaine Walsh research (source George Alexander Kiser's bible).

You are aware that George Garmon ran a mill on Rocky River and the present Garmon Mill Road is named after his mill? Ed Hyland

My line through Joseph and Margaret has been proven for DAR. The line is through his son Henry too. I'll be happy to share what information I have. Here is the basic story on Joseph.

Joseph was not quite 18 years old at the time of his father's death, but was appointed with his mother as executor of his father's will. Joseph Howell was named on a committee to examine and allow public claims in March or April 1753. On April 13, 1762, he was chosen to represent Edgecombe Co. in the assembly and again in 1764, and for the last time in 1765. He apparently moved out of the county about 1765 as he did not represent the county again. An act for establishing a town on the land of Joseph Howell on Tar River was passed and 150 acres of land was purchased by the government. "Capt. Joseph Howell retained only a graveyard plot, when he passed the title to the trustees named on the deed." A second act was passed to encourage Joseph to build a bridge over the river at or near the place called Howell's Ferry at Tarborough in Edgecombe Co. and he was given authority to collect tolls on men, horses, carriages and cattle passing over it. In the rooms of the NC Historical Commission at Raliegh are the original minutes of the commission appointed to lay out the town of Tarboro. Joseph Howell's name appears many times in those minutes until 1764, but after then it disappears. It apprear evident that he removed westward with the general trend of migration to Mecklenburgh Co. in 1765-66, Mecklenbureg Co. was taken from Anson Co and in turn became Cabarrus Co.

Among the signers of "the petition of Inhabitants of Anson Co, being part of the Remonstrance of the men of the assembly"
Joseph Howell, Jr., who was 43 years old when Independence was declared, saw active duty during the Revolution in the militia of Mcklenburgh County, NC as a foot soldier in Capt. Adam Alexander's Co., having enlisted June 6, 1766 and fought in the battle of Gilford Court House and Kings Mountain. This service is recorded in "NC Historical Commission Book C". He also furnished supplies and money to the Continental Army.

He is also listed as born abt 1749 Caberus Co. NC or born 1733 Edgecombe Co., NC. But the DAR apps say he was born in VA 1733 died DeKalb GA 1835 and lived in Mecklenburg Co NC during the Revolution. Where the application said he died in DeKalb, they checked it, and wrote in Now Campbell Co. Where the application said he was born Edgecombe Co NC, they put that in parenthesis and wrote in VA. Her application called him Joseph Howell Jr. and on each of these instances, they put Jr in parenthesis. Comments by Robyn Putnam.
