  • Note:

Ary Melvina Stanley who was my (Vern Taylor's) second great grandmother was a 10th great granddaughter of Lord Thomas Stanley. Ary was the first of my ancestors to join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She rode her horse all over the hills of Wilkes County, North Carolina dressed in a black shawl, carrying a Bible, looking for the truth. She was very religious ? a faithful Baptist. She read her scriptures and often pondered them. She had a love for the Lord. She attended all the church meetings, but could not find what she was looking for until 1884.

One evening her son-in-law, Bud Nance, went down the mountain to the little store and post office to get the mail. There were two strangers there, and when Bud learned they were from the west, he stayed to talk. He wanted to go west and was fascinated by their stories. It was rather late when he got home.
Granny asked him, ?What kept you, Bud??

He told her about meeting two men from the west. Granny asked, ?Were these men, one of them tall and slender and the other one kinda short and fat? Were they wearing pin-striped suits and carrying metal cases??

Bud said, ?Yeah, Granny. Did you see them??

She said, ?No, not like you think, but in the morning, you go down there, before they get gone. Tell them I want to see them.?

So the next morning, bright and early, Bud went. The Elders, Elder Rouche and Elder Erastus Farmer, came back with him. They taught Granny the gospel. She was eventually baptised in June of 1885 by Elder Erastus G. Farmer and confirmed by James T. Thorns.

This was a time in the south when the Mormons weren?t accepted or very welcome. People often threw rocks at the missionaries, give then wrong directions; harassed them. In the late 1800?s in the south, 5 missionaries and three members were killed. In general Roueche and Farmer met with kind treatment, but at other times there was persecution. They were stoned twice, one time attacked with clubs, shot at twice, and mobbed several times. Many times they were threatened with violence, but they were never injured in the time they spent in Wilkes County.

Ary was baptized June 18, 1885 at the age of 73. Ary had seen two men dressed like the missionaries in a dream. Not all of Ary's descendents joined the LDS Church but the ones who did became the backbone of the Church in Wilkes County and other places in North Carolina.

Granny was a brave lady. Especially since her husband, John Wesley Ball, was furious with her for joining the church. He wouldn?t even stay in the same house with her. For a while he slept out by the grist mill where they ground the corn and flour. After twelve years, he eventually was baptised a year before he died in 1899.

All 11 of their children joined the church. Granny?s family donated the lumber, helped mill it, and helped to build the first LDS church there.

(Her prayers and influence have extended through several generations. Her grandson Marvin Ball married Olive McVey in Baltimore Maryland before his tour in the US Navy in WWII. After the war they moved to a farm in Iowa and Marvin appeared to be inactive in the Mormon church or too far from a meeting house to attend. After ten years of marriage they divorced with some bitterness which looked like Olive and children would continue in the Baptist faith which they were attending. After moving to California even going to church waned because of the seven day work week involved in running a large goat dairy. One afternoon coming home from town in the back seat of the car, Vern and Mel, the two boys were just being boisterous and hoped to annoy their parents, asked Mom, "Why don't we go to church any more?" The answer to that was next Sunday, they got up and went to church again. But they didn't go to the Baptist church as before. They went to the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints known as the Mormons. What could have caused Olive Taylor to change faiths at this time? Could it be prayers from this families second great grandmother? Though the answer is not known, the family received the lessons from the Elders and were baptised. We thought we were the first members of our family to join the Mormon church. Only decades later has it become apparent that Ary Melvina Stanley Ball has left her descendants a great legacy. Now there are third great grandchildren of hers that are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. ~Vern Taylor 2014)
