    Marvin Homer Ball

Marvin apparently met Olive while both were working at Manning Aircraft plant in Baltimore, MD. After their marriage in 1943, and because of the escalation of WWII, he enlisted in the Navy. After the war they moved to Decatur County Iowa where Olive's family was from. The farm they moved to was located 4 miles west of Corydon and mile north of the #2 highway. Previously this highway was located another mile south of it's present (1997) location. The Gretsky farm was just east of Marvin's. I remember their son Danny Gretsky and Vernon Ball (aka. Vern Taylor) having pancake eating contests. The 5th farm east of Marvin's was the Clair and Mildred Taylor farm which was 3 miles west of Corydon and mile north of #2 highway. Clair remembers Marvin's farm having a house by the road, a barn up on the hill in back, a machine shed, a chicken shed, and a double crib. Clair thought some of the buildings were still there on Marvin's farm, but all the buildings on his farm are gone because of the combined farm that now owns his former place. Danny Gretsky and a brother still own their farm (1997).
As young children, Clair's children Barbara, Dean, Gary, and Marvin's children Vern, and Mel had played together. Gary and Mel were both born on the same day and year.
Clair and Mildred divorced, and Marvin and Olive divorced about 1956. Olive remarried Clair Taylor in 1957 and moved to a dairy farm on Lone Tree Road in Escalon, California with Vern and Mel.
Marvin Ball married 5 April 1958 to Harriet Ann McMahan and had the following children:

    i. Teresa "Terry" Elaine Ball (born 5 June 1959)
ii. Cecilia Annette Ball (born 5 June 1960)
iii. Marvin Homer Ball Jr. (born 30 July 1961)
iv. Donald Wayne Ball (born 5 Nov 1962)

All the above became Vern and Mel's half brothers and sisters. Because living in California put quite a bit of distance between the families, not much was ever known about them. Marvin and Harriet's children were raised in North Carolina. Terry married Dennis Smart and they moved to Roy, Utah for his work at Thiokol Propulsion. After reestablishing contact between the families, my family went and visited Terry's family in Utah. They were very gracious and welcomed us back many times.
"I'm sure part of the problems they (Marvin and Olive) had were caused by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Have you seen Saving Private Ryan? Dad was there at most of the major invasion points. Dad was quiet but when he spoke you knew he had put much thought into what he said. He worked for Carolina Galvanizing Co. and retired from there. The city Water treatment job was his second job. He and Granddaddy (AY) Ball raised chickens on Granddaddy's farm for years. They commercial raised 1100 chickens at a time. We all helped." --Terry Smart
Marvin and Harriet made a visit to their daughter, Terry Smart, in 1988. They were there from about 6 June 1988 to 11 July 1988. He saw his granddaughter Katie's first birthday, and witnessed his grandson Matt's baptism. They also celebrated Marvin and Dennis' birthday together on the 5 July. Cecilia's 1st husband, and Dennis and Marvin were all born on 5 July.
During that time they also made a trip to California to see Vern and Mel. I was still working billboards at that time, in Stockton, so I took Marvin with me for one days work. I think the tallest billboard we climbed that day was 30 feet. This didn't seem to bother Marvin at all. By the end of the day he knew how to wallpaper the bottom half of the billboard while I did the top.
The next day we made a trip to Manteca to visit Clair and the farm where Mel and I grew up. Olive had died in 1987, so they didn't meet. That meeting would have been awkward, because she never forgave or forget whatever caused their divorce.
All I can say is that Marvin liked to work, never complained, and was friendly for the time I got to know him. I liked him.
After Marvin retired, he had some heart problems, and died in 1992 at the age of 67. --Vern Taylor
