  • Note:

Thomas Finlay enlisted 14 Aug 1846 at Fort Leavenworth in the U.S. Mormon Battalion as a private in Company D. He completed the march to California and was discharged 16 Jul 1847 in Los Angeles.

He returned to Salt Lake in 1847 in the Levi W. Hancock/Jefferson Hunt/James Pace/Andrew Lytle Company.

    Departure: 25-26 August 1847
Arrival in Salt Lake Valley: 11,16 October 1847

    Company Information:
This company was composed of 117 returning Mormon Battalion veterans. They traveled over the Sierra Mountains from the Cosumnes River near Sutter's Fort in California. From the beginning, they divided and traveled separately in small groups, but generally within a few day's distance from each other. After crossing the mountains, they followed a course which took them to Fort Hall and then to Salt Lake Valley.

I looked at Thomas Finlay who married Ann HODSON (dau of John Hobson and Maria Gillard) b. Sept, 1839, and found he was born in 1834, and so too young to have enlisted.

Another possibility is Thomas Betzora Findley b. 18 Aug 1813 Tennessee. He married Nancy Bledsoe (dau of Moses Bledsoe and Polly Turner) b. 1815/16 Georgia, on 15 Jan 1834 in Perry Co. Alabama. They had six children with two birthdates abt 1845 and 1848 which would allow him to serve in the Mexican War of 1846. He died 20 Oct 1888 in Lamar or Hunt Co. Texas. see AF VC4M-G3.
