Johnson, Henry Mitchell, a member of the Mormon Battalion, Company A, was born July 12, 1821, in Dearborn, Dearborn Co., Indiana, a son of Cornelius Johnson and Nancy Johnson. He emigrated with his mother to Jackson County, Missouri, in 1832, was baptized in the summer of 1833, and in November of the same year was driven with his mother from Jackson County, being forced to travel bare-footed over the frozen prairie. In 1848 he was again exiled, and while on this journey westward, he enlisted in the Mormon Battalion and marched to California. He arrived in Utah Oct. 24, 1848. In the spring of 1849 he was ordained an Elder, and in September, 1850, he married Louisa Frances Clark. Bro. Johnson was a minute man in all the Indian wars, was a lieutenant in the "Life Guards," and in April, 1856, he was called on a mission to Carson Valley, and got as far as Ogden, when he was taken sick. He returned to Salt Lake City and died March 20, 1857.

Henry Mitchell Johnson, son of Cornelius and Nancy Johnson, was born on 12 July 1821 in Cleaves Township, Dearborn, Indiana. His mother joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in 1832 migrated with Henry to Jackson County, Missouri, to be with co-religionists. In the summer of 1833 Henry was baptized into his mother's faith. In November 1833(38) religious persecutors drove them from their home, forcing them to walk barefoot over the frozen prairie to safety (Jenson, LDS Bio, 4:750).

By 1838 continual religious persecution forced them to flee from Missouri to Illinois. Henry settled in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, until mob terrorism in 1846 compelled him to remove to Iowa Territory. In Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory, he enlisted in the Mormon Battalion. Henry marched with the battalion from Council Bluffs to Ciudad de los Angeles. During his year in the battalion, Henry was known by several names, including
    John Baker,
    Woody C. Jameson,
    Stephen Arnold, and
    Stephen H. Johnson (Muster Roll).

From April 1847 until his discharge on 16 July 1847 he was on duty at the fortification in California. After his discharge he migrated to the Salt Lake Valley, arriving on 24 October 1848. In the spring of 1849 he was ordained an elder, and in September 1850 he married Louisa Frances Clark. (Jenson, LDS Bio, 4:750). Henry and Louisa resided in Salt Lake City, where they accumulated a real wealth of $150 through farming in 1850 (Utah Federal Census 1850). On 23 August 1852 he was endowed in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City (TIB). In April 1856 he accepted a settling mission call to Carson Valley, Ormsby, Nevada. En route to Carson Valley he became ill and returned to Salt Lake City (Jenson, LDS Bio, 4:750). Henry Johnson died 20 March 1857 in Salt Lake City at the age of 35. ~submitted by Elder Snow
