    Finding John McVey
    by Vern Taylor
    http://truemiracleswithgenealogy.com/

When I first started doing genealogy over thirty years ago, I worked back to my third great-grandfather Samuel McVey and decided his father was probably Sgt. John McVey 1737-1823 born in Scotland. I couldn't prove it. I needed help.

I had learned that Samuel McVey lived and died in Greenbrier and Fayette County Virginia, which is now West Virginia. So I called the phone company's information number for Lewisburg, West Virginia, which was close to where the McVeys lived since the time of the Revolutionary War. I got three numbers for McVeys living there. Then I gathered my courage, and with a little fear and excitement, called the first number for John McVey.

I introduced myself and asked if the person who answered the phone was related to Samuel McVey? What a blessing it was to find myself talking to Betty McVey Shields who was the genealogist for the family! Betty and her family still lived on the old McVey property on Muddy Creek Mountain. She is my third cousin once removed and we had a great talk. She confirmed my fourth great-grandfather was Sgt. John McVey and ended up sending me lots of printed information. The photo is the only signature of Sgt John McVey I ever located.

Our ancestors do want to be found and bless us in many ways to find them.

Before I get into the background and functioning of the Virginia
Regiment during the French and Indian War, I'd like to make a correction to one of your impressions from your reading that "the New England counties were the most responsible." In fact, the colonies of Pennsylvania and south were more responsible, in terms of responses to the wishes of the Crown for men and money. And Virginia can be held solely responsible for the start of this last conflict for empire between France and Great Britain.

The Virginia Regiment was initially raised (it was NOT a militia force,
it was a professional army) in 1754 to protect an Ohio Company fort
being built where present Pittsburgh is. However, the French captured the fort before the Regiment arrived, and through several misadventures, this campaign ended in the infamous surrender, by George Washington, of the Regiment at Fort Necessity, located in what is now western Pennsylvania.

The regiment was reconstituted, by request of the Crown, to serve with British troops under General Edward Braddock in a 1755 campaign to remove the French from the Forks-of-the-Ohio (now Pittsburgh, PA). The regiment was organized into independent companies without an overall commander to avoid conflicts in command between provincial and Royal army officers. After that debacle and retreat of the British troops to winter quarters in July in Philadelphia, the regiment was left at Fort Cumberland (present Cumberland MD) in a state of semi-organization. Beginning in September 1755, the regiment was reorganized under its new
commanding officer, Colonel George Washington. Recruiting to raise the Regiment's strength and building of forts to protect the frontier was begun at this time.

In 1758, the Regiment was called upon to serve with the British troops and provincial troops from Pennsylvania and Maryland in the campaign to capture Fort Duquesne at the Forks-of-the-Ohio. The commander was General John Forbes, his second Lt. Col. Henry Bouquet. In order to meet the quota of men set by the Crown, Virginia raised a second regiment of 1000 men (making 2000 Virginians participating in the campaign). This was called the 2nd Virginia Regiment and was under command of Col. William Byrd, with GW being overall commander of both regiments. Note: this was Byrd's first time in military service of Virginia. He had not served in any capacity with the Virginia Regiment prior to 1758. After the successful campaign, Washington retired to Mount Vernon, the 2nd
Virginia was disbanded, and Byrd was placed in charge of the Regiment until it was disbanded in 1762.

As far as recruiting for the regiment, initially to fill the ranks,
something like one-tenth of each county's militia was drafted to serve. This method didn't produce the best results, so they went to an all volunteer army, enticing people to join by offering a bounty of ?5.
Recruits came from all over Virginia including the Eastern Shore.
Company commanders and subalterns also scoured neighboring colonies for recruits, gaining Maryland and Pennsylvania residents as well. I can't remember when the all volunteer army was started, but I think it was about 1757. The all volunteer method proved to be the best method of raising an effective fighting force that was admired by its British commanders until it was disbanded.

The war in the South, and particularly the Virginia Regiment, has been my research topic for many years.
