Henry Peterson, Henry Smock, Garret Smock (and "negro George") are listed close together in south and southwestern Nelson Co. Henry Smock and Garret Smock are consecutive entries on the original tax list, indicating that they probably lived adjoining each other. Also listed closeby is Philip Lee, an ancestor of many Petersons. A William Peterson is listed closeby. This is the only listing I have found for a person by that name until Henry Peterson's grandson appears in the tax records some 43 years later. The identity of this William Peterson is unknown to me. Phillip (Philomen) Lee came to Pottinger's Creek in the Marion Co. area with Basil Hayden, Sr., in 1785 and lived on an adjoining farm in the close vicinity of the present Holy Cross Catholic Church. The Hayden family founded the distillery that produces the "Old Grandad" brand of bourbon, and it is reported that Basil Hayden, Sr. was the person for whom "Old Grandad" was named. A tax list for 1787 is entitled "List of Persons from the Junction of the Rolling [Fork] [and] Beach Fork up to the mouth of Hardins Creek thence across to the Indian Lick, Thence down the Rolling Forks to the said Junction--April 1787" and includes: Samuel Lee, Samuel Pottinger, William Pottinger, Abednego Carter, Charles Lee, Benjamin Roberts, William Lee, John Brunts (2 white males, 3 negroes above 16, 9 negroes under 16, 11 cattle, 3 tithables), Philip Lee, Bazzle Haden (Basil Hayden), William Haden, Bennet Haden, Philip Mattingly. A Nelson Co. list of the "Tyths of Capt. Charles Reeds on Pottengers Creek July 19, 1788" contains the following names: Richard James Rapier, John Brunt (4 tithables), Richard and John Lee, Charles Lee, Wm. Lee, John Lee, Garrot and Henrey Smock, Samuel Pottinger, Wm. Pottinger, Abednego Carter, Philip and James Lee, Benjamin Roberts, Henrey Peterson.
