Note: Frederick LeClaire was born in Stillwater. He worked in lumber camp
near Ely, MN where he met Mary Johnson from Winton, MN. She became
pregnant. Frederick was from a stongly Catholic family and the Catholic
priest refused to marry them. They married in Ramsey County in civil
ceremony Aug. 14, 1904. The twin girls Ethel and Adeline were born
months later on Nov. 12, 1904. Fred fell away from the Catholic church
soon afterwards. Mary had children baptized Lutheran and made sure they
attended sunday school. She herself never went to church as she said
she didn't have nice enough clothes. She listened to radio services
and was active church ladies groups. Fred was reported to have been
a heavy drinker.
