    1. Courtesy Laurene Melgey Shewan Dec 2007:

My husband and I went to a Church flea market, about 1 mile from our home. As I was leaving, I noticed a
plaque with the name David Sherman on it; the same name as one of my husband's ancestors. A worker told
me that the remains of four men had been entombed in the bell tower when the Church was built. She encouraged
me to view the Church records. A few days later, she removed the vintage books from the vault and I immediately
found David Sherman's birth and marriage records. Apparently, my husband's ancestor was the first Deacon at
the Church of Christ in Stratfield, CT. When he died in 1753, he was buried in the Old Parish Cemetery. However,
when the latest building was erected, his remains were put in the bell tower, along with those of the first Pastors,
    as a place of honor.

None of this sounds ironic except when you consider this: David Sherman's daughter, Prudence, married and
left CT around 1760 to become a New England Planter in Nova Scotia. Generations upon generations of my
husband's family remained there for almost 200 years. In 1949, his immediate family left Nova Scotia for a new
life in CT. Unknowingly, they moved to the same neighborhood as David Sherman's family, which is the same
area where we now live, but that's a whole different story! Who says you can't go home?

Laurene and her family now (2008) live in Bridgeport, Fairfield County, CT.
