  • Note: 9th Baron Neville of Raby and sixth Earl of Westmorland, attained for high treason, joined in the insurrection of Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland and preserved his life by going to Scotland where found concealment and protection for a long time at Feryhurst Castle in Boxburgshire. Eventually he went to Flanders but his vast inheritance was confiscated and he suffered the extremity of poverty. Brancepeth and Raby went to strange hands, and nothing remained for the exiled lord. He was living in the Low Countries in 1572, on a miserable pittance allowed him by the bounty of the King of Spain. He died in 1601; under his attainder the old Barony of Nevill, of Raby, and the Earldom of Westmoreland became forfeited. It was adjudged that Edward Neville should not succeed to the earldom, though heir male of the first degree. The authority for which decision was grounded on the statute of 26th Henry VIII, cap. 13, whereby, in cases of high treason, it is enacted, that the offender shall forfeit all such lands, tenements and hereditaments. Brought up as a Roman Catholic at Raby Castle, Durham, the family seat. His marriage to the Howard family connected him with the old Catholic party, and fired to rebellion by the advise of his Catholic relatives, especially Christopher Neville. 1
