By 1915 or 1916, he moved to New Haven where he became a foreman at Winchester Repeating Arms Company. He bought a house at 69 Lilac Street in New Haven and lots on Whitney Avenue, John was a kind, religious man with a heavy Irish brogue. His grandson Ray remembers them going on very long walks, during which they'd visit both churches and taverns! He lived with his daughter Mary for many years prior to his death.
