    BACKGROUND INFO:

The following describes the general background of where the Illinois Rury's came from and where they immigrated to. Another set of Rury's immigrated earlier to New York, and are listed under that branch. There currently is no direct relationship, but due to the fact both groups are from Germany would indicate they are related in some way. Only research of German records will verify this.

Various records would indicate that the Rury's in Illinois emigrated from Hanover, Prussia or Hannover, Prussia.

It was an electorate of the Holy Roman Empire from 1692 to 1805. Hanover was an independent kingdom in Germany from 1815 to 1866, when Hanover became a province of the Kingdom of Prussia after Austro-Prussian War), (which joined the German Empire in 1871) until 1918, then a province of the Free State of Prussia until 1946. After World War II its territories were incorporated into Lower Saxony, Germany.

In 1837 Hanover was separated from Britain due to accession laws.

There is a town in Hanover also called Hanover, but census records only list the country.

There are several rumors on where the Rury's first arrived in the U.S. and how they got to Illinois. There is strong evidence that the Illinois Rury's made their way to New Orleans, LA from Hanover, Prussia and came up the Mississippi river to Steele's Mills, IL. This was originally Georgetown and Alma and later became Steeleville. It was named after John Steels a revolutionary war hero.

Maeva (Lane) Troup recently reported (11/98) this information. The Illinois Rury's name on the ships list was Rurah from Hanover, Prussia (now Germany) and appears that way on 1860 census records. Rurah is most likely phonetic spelling as there are no Rurah's in Germany that I can find.. They came into the port at New Orleans and wound there way to Steeleville, IL. Dad is proud of his German heritage, sometimes speaks a little German. In later documents name changes to Rury.

Earliest Illinois records intermix the spellings Rurah, Rurede, Rurhede, Rurde and Rury. None of which shows up in Germany except Rurade with the "a" with 2 dots overtop, translated in english as "ae" or "a". Rurade shows up 10 times around Bremen in 1999. I can easily see where Rurade would sound like the names translated in the early documents as the 'd' is silent in German. Other similar German names would be Rurainski, Rurainsky, Ruranski or Rur. Rury does shows up about 40 times on the 1891 England Census, so it's possible we descend from them.

There are variations of the Rury name in Scotland and Ireland, but no viable information that any of these descendants lead to a Rury. Rury R Holman indicates that Rury is a variant of Rorie.which ia a variant of the Scottish and Irish (County Tyrone) anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Rhuardhi son of Rory. Ruari (Irish) used always as a first name.Irish Familyh name Rudraigi pronounced Roo-ree (Rury).

Note: In Polish language, a "rura" means one pipe, more than two of the rura is "rury" which is the plural for the word. Other close spellings starting with "rur~" covers pipeline and tubular. "Rurka" is a nickname for Rura. Not to suggest that we are of Polish descent, it can come in handy to know when you do internet searches and find hundreds of hits for sites in Poland.
